The Open Secret for Spiritual Success - Part 10

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering - "The Open Secret for Spiritual Success" wherein we were meditating on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.1.12. We saw in how Khatvanga Maharaj why he preferred to come down to earth, when he knew that only moment was left in his life-span. Now we shall see further.

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 9.9.47 Khatvanga Maharaj says

atheśa-māyā-raciteṣu saṅgaṁ
guṇeṣu gandharva-puropameṣu
rūḍhaṁ prakṛtyātmani viśva-kartur
bhāvena hitvā tam ahaṁ prapadye

Therefore I should now give up my attachment for things created by the external energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I should engage in thought of the Lord and should thus surrender unto Him. This material creation, having been created by the external energy of the Lord, is like an imaginary town visualized on a hill or in a forest. Every conditioned soul has a natural attraction and attachment for material things, but one must simply give up this attachment and surrender unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Everything in this material world is temporary. But by the effect of external energy of the Lord it appears as though it is permanent and forgetting our real constitution position we start getting attached to the things here. Everything becomes a dream in due course of time. When we don't realise and accept this reality, we will be always disturbed, anxious. Searching for love, happiness, morality etc in this material world is like searching for water in a barren land or as Khatvanga Maharaj says it's like visualising an imaginary town in the middle of mountains or forest. Instead of wasting our human birth in such useless search, it is better to focus our mind on the Supreme Lord Krishna - the source of eternity, knowledge and bliss - Whose lotus feet is the safest abode. That's why Khatvanga Maharaj simply wants to surrender unto the Supreme Lord Krishna.

Now we may wonder when we are living in this material body, material world - dealing with so many things in day to day life, it is not possible to avoid the material things. His Divine Grace very nicely explains in the purport, "Even though a devotee may engage in apparently materialistic activities, he knows his position very well. Nirbandhaḥ kṛṣṇa-sambandhe yuktaṁ vairāgyam ucyate. If one engages all material things in relation with the loving service of the Lord, one is situated in yukta-vairāgya, proper renunciation. In this material world, nothing should be accepted for one’s sense gratification: everything should be accepted for the service of the Lord. This is the mentality of the spiritual world. Mahārāja Khaṭvāṅga advises that one give up material attachments and surrender unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Thus one achieves success in life. This is pure bhakti-yoga, which involves vairāgya-vidyā — renunciation and knowledge.

śikṣārtham ekaḥ puruṣaḥ purāṇaḥ
kṛpāmbudhir yas tam ahaṁ prapadye

Let me surrender unto the Personality of Godhead who has appeared now as Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. He is the ocean of all mercy and has come down to teach us material detachment, learning and devotional service to Himself.” (Caitanya-candrodaya-nāṭaka 6.74) Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu inaugurated this movement of vairāgya-vidyā, by which one detaches himself from material existence and engages in loving devotional service. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement of devotional service is the only process by which to counteract our false prestige in this material world."

Lord Krishna indeed is ocean of mercy - kṛpāmbudhi. That's why He has descended in person kindly as Caitanya Mahaprabhu, to save fallen souls like us in Kaliyuga by freely distributing Holy Names and also teaching us by His own example as to how a devotee should behave. So as Krishnadas Kaviraj Goswami says in Caitanya Caritamrt in Adilila verse 14.1

kathañcana smṛte yasmin duṣkaraṁ sukaraṁ bhavet
vismṛte viparītaṁ syāt śrī-caitanyaṁ namāmi tam

Things that are very difficult to do become easy to execute if one somehow or other simply remembers Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. But if one does not remember Him, even easy things become very difficult. To this Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu I offer my respectful obeisances.

So may we alway remember the mercy of Sri Guru and Gauranga, surrender unto Them and always dovetail our activities in the service of Krishna.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
