Clean Habits Attract us to Bhagavatam - Part 5

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of transcription of a thought provoking discussion between our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj and devotees on 2nd October 2009, in Sri Sri Radha NeelMadhav dham, Rajkot. In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj that

1. Computers are a curse and are capable of destroying our sadhana when we don't use them judiciousy in Krishna's service.
2. We have to die alone. Supersoul alone continues with soul even after death.
3. In Vedic times people were magnanimous and simple and so they were self-sufficient.
4. Srila Prabhupada has gifted us with simple living and high thinking.

Now we shall hear further.

Maharaj: My grandfather had a broken (suit)case. This tin (suitcase) and it was all rusted. And he will lock it and he was very particular about locking and by other side it is open. (laughter) He was trying to tell me, "you lock from both sides, 2 locks are there, have you locked them? have you locked them? have you locked them?" I was fed up. I told, "Dada, you are nonsense." He said, "No, no, don’t speak. (laughter) You are Kali Yuga in the house." Because I told him this, he said, "you are nonsense." That side it is open, and he said, "you are nonsense." (laughter) He said, "keep quiet, do whatever I am telling." Again 3 locks. (laughter) Then again, I have to check if the locks are done. (laughter) I said "Dada, you are simple nonsense." He said that, "you are living Kali Yuga in our house." (laughter) And I did not understand as I was young. "What Kali Yuga?" I asked.  It is simple that I can understand the lock has no use because the other side is open. "Don’t talk", he said. He said, "This is my father’s (suit)case." (laughter) Aare man, his father’s case. (laughter) I don’t know his father was what type. (laughter) This was the condition. And they were trying to be very careful. He will always sit near the case. I said that, "you have to go and eat, and you have to leave the case alone." "No, no, no don’t touch it." (laughter)

So, these old persons were crazy in a way. (laughter) And alone, he will take the mortgage and he will write a cheat and tie with it and keep it in the same case and 3 locks. (laughter) And from the bag, they can take anything. Mortgage was there, bank was there – he will lend money, he will take interest and everything. And there were no papers, slate was there, he would write on a slate, very nice handwriting. And the customer will come in - 1 in a day. (laughter) He will say that, "I am very busy. (laughter) Don’t disturb me – customer is there." He will calculate and then get the interest or payees or whatever. And he will do all himself, very particular. And he thought that he is the owner of the bank. (laughter) So simple people were there. They were really God people. They were God fearing people. The bag was open, but nothing was stolen. And gold was there, and other ornaments were there, he was doing mortgage. (laughter) So, everything was there, and the whole house knew that the bag was full of everything, they will not go near it. In the house, it was very nice, nobody came. Locks were absent, there were no locks. In the house, the main door was a very big door but there was no lock. No lock.

Devotee: There is one village near Maharashtra we went. Maharashtra, near Nasik Nagar Nagar, no locks and even doors to the house. Not even banks, not even shops, the whole village is like that.

Maharaj: Where is it?  (Devotee replied, Shani Shingnapur. Near Nasik. Even now, not even banks, not even to the shops it is one of the wonders in the world,) Yes really.

Devotee: Now also you can  go and see, now also for privacy’s sake there are curtains for changing clothes in bathroom. That’s the only thing right now available.

Maharaj: And locks also don’t have value. That’s what I was telling to my grandfather. That you are unnecessarily and crazily forcing me to lock. (laughter) He said, "you are Kali Yuga in our house", because I was replying. He could not tolerate anybody replying. Then I went to see him once and I forgot to put on the cap. He said, "Kali Yuga has arrived." (laughter) I was fed up with Kali Yuga. "What Kali Yuga?", I told. "We are going to temple and chanting His names. You are so nice." I had to praise him otherwise, I would not have lasted. (laughter) So, he said that, "Kali Yuga is in my doorstep." I asked, "how, how?" He said, "you came without a cap." (laughter) So, then I had to find out the cap before I went to him. To that extent, they were pure but they could pass their life that way.

Krishna willing we can continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Dinavatsala Krishna das
