The All Munificent Purushottama - Part 15

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "The All Munificient Purushottama" wherein we were meditating on the various incarnations of the Lord and how specifically the Lord manifested His quality of being a Purushottama.

Lord Kapila as Purushottama: Lord Kapila appeared as son of Kardama Muni and Devahuti. The Bhagavatam says that Devahuti worshipped the Supreme Person for many years and the Lord pleased by her bhakti, entered the semen of Kardama Muni and appeared in Devahuti as fire comes from wood in a sacrifice. Though the Lord does not have any birth, He appears via the semen of Kardama Muni. Srila Prabhupada states in the commentary of SB 3.24.6 “Fire is already present in wood, but by a certain process, fire is kindled. Similarly, God is all-pervading. He is everywhere, and since He may come out from everything, He appeared in His devotee’s semen. Just as an ordinary living entity takes his birth by taking shelter of the semen of a certain living entity, the Supreme Personality of Godhead accepts the shelter of the semen of His devotee and comes out as His son. This manifests His full independence to act in any way, and it does not mean that He is an ordinary living entity forced to take birth in a certain type of womb. Lord Nsiha appeared from the pillar of Hirayakaśipu’s palace, Lord Varāha appeared from the nostril of Brahmā, and Lord Kapila appeared from the semen of Kardama, but this does not mean that the nostril of Brahmā or the pillar of Hirayakaśipu’s palace or the semen of Kardama Muni is the source of the appearance of the Lord.

  • Lord Kapila wanted to give fatherhood to Kardama Muni, He appeared via the semen of Kardama Muni, though He does not need a seminal birth.
  • Though the Lord does not need any garbha vāsa (residence in the womb) to appear, He resided in the womb of Devahuti to give Ultimate Motherhood to her.
  • To give them great name and fame, He appeared as son of Kardama Muni (SB 3.24.4) and Devahuti (SB 3.24.19).
  • The Lord’s form as Kapila directs the fallen souls and enriches them with knowledge and devotion so that they may go back to Godhead. The Lord appeared via the semen of Kardama Muni so that we need not take another birth via the semen of a father by following Lord Kapila.

Srimad Bhagavatam 3.33.5

tva deha-tantra praśamāya pāpmanā
nideśa-bhājā ca vibho vibhūtaye
yathāvatārās tava sūkarādayas
tathāyam apy ātma-pathopalabdhaye

My dear Lord, You have assumed this body in order to diminish the sinful activities of the fallen and to enrich their knowledge in devotion and liberation. Since these sinful people are dependent on Your direction, by Your own will You assume incarnations as a boar and as other forms. Similarly, You have appeared in order to distribute transcendental knowledge to Your dependents.

In all above scenarios, Lord Kapila lowered Himself for the benefit of His devotees/all living entities. So Devahuti addresses Lord Kapila as Purushottama as follows in Srimad Bhagavatam 3.26.9

prakte puruasyāpi lakaa puruottama
brūhi kāra
ayor asya sad-asac ca yad-ātmakam

Devahūti said: O Supreme Personality of Godhead, kindly explain the characteristics of the Supreme Person and His energies, for both of these are the causes of this manifest and unmanifest creation.

Once a great king Sagara performed Aswamedha sacrifice. The sons of Sagara while searching for the sacrificial horse, blamed Kapila as a thief and came to attack Him. But they were all burnt to ashes by their own offense. When Amshuman came and asked forgiveness from the Lord, Kapila immediately forgave him and advised that only Ganges water can deliver their ancestors. Because of this advice only, later Bhageeratha who came in the lineage of Sagara brought Ganges to earth. Kapila thus helped in the deliverance of the sons of Sagara though they were offenders and tried to kill him. Also only because of His direction, the planet earth was blessed with the descent of Ganges. Till now Mother Ganges is purifying so many living entities. Thus He demonstrated the quality of being Purushottama (sacrificing Himself for other’s benefit).

Krishna willing, we shall meditate on other incarnations of the Lord in the ensuing offerings.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Narahari Krishna das
