Scriptures Strengthen our Faith in Holy Names - Part 10

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the transcription of one of the nectarean discussion by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj in Auckland on 15th July 2003. In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj that as soon as we get some time, we should chant Holy Name, read and learn the verses. Now we shall hear further.

SB 1.2.3
yaḥ svānubhāvam akhila-śruti-sāram ekam
adhyātma-dīpam atititīrṣatāṁ tamo ’ndham
saṁsāriṇāṁ karuṇayāha purāṇa-guhyaṁ
taṁ vyāsa-sūnum upayāmi guruṁ munīnām

Let me offer my respectful obeisances unto him [Śuka], the spiritual master of all sages, the son of Vyāsadeva, who, out of his great compassion for those gross materialists who struggle to cross over the darkest regions of material existence, spoke this most confidential supplement to the cream of Vedic knowledge, after having personally assimilated it by experience.

Maharaj: This verse particularly, please remember that Vyasa Bhagavan initiates his son, and this is our parampara, Prabhupada also initiates us, and we also initiate others in turn. Please, this is the secret of the initiation. Here it is very clear. See yaḥ means those who people sva anubhava self-assimilated (experience). We have all essence of śrutis, essence of Bhagavatam, Prabhupada’s Bhagavatam is there, we have essence with us. See, akhila-śruti-sāram ekam, there are two things, one is our own experience and on the other hand we have the essence of Bhagavatam or Bhagavad Gita or whatever. Please remember these things.

On one hand we have our own experience, we are passing our day-to-day life, isn’t it? And we have so much experience. As soon as we advance in our age, we add to our own experience. So please, this bulk of experience is there. And this śrutis are there, shastras are there, essence of shastras is there. Please combine them Vyasa Bhagavan says. You just combine them. And then what happens, as soon as we think about the shastras, and as soon as you have the essence of shastras and the experience coming together, then adhyātma-dīpam, it re-kindles the transcendental lamp of knowledge - adhyātma-dīpam, dīp is the thing which gives light to others. That is dīp. Unless there is a light, it can never be called dīp. It is a lamp. And as soon as the lamp is there, the light is bound to be there, otherwise lamp doesn’t have any meaning. And particularly this dīp is not an ordinary lamp, it is a transcendental lamp. It transcends the material existence. (Maharaj speaks in Hindi). adhyātma-dīpam is re-kindled, the transcendental lamp of knowledge. And as soon as it is rekindled, then what happens, atititīrṣatāṁ tamo ’ndham, we cross over tamo ’ndham, the blinded darkness of ignorance, see Prabhupada’s words. Please understand this. (Appreciating devotee children who recited the verses and translations Maharaj says) So nice of you to recite the translations. Very nice, I am very thankful to you.

atititīrṣatāṁ tamo ’ndham, as soon as the transcendental lamp is there, it will help you to cross over the blinded darkness of ignorance. And then he gives us the duty. This is real initiation. See, first thing he says that you have your own experience, then you should know the essence of shastras, combine them together, and try to convince your own mind, and then the adhyātma-dīp will be rekindled, and as soon as the lamp is there, transcendental lamp of knowledge, then it will help you to cross over the blinded darkness of material existence. And as soon as you are on the verge of crossing, then please saṁsāriṇāṁ karuṇayāha, these three words are very important instructions, saṁsāriṇāṁ, the living entities those who are entangled in the web of birth, death, disease and old-age, they are known as saṁsāri, we are helplessly entangled into this. karuṇayā- be merifcul to them, āha- speak out. And what you have to speak out, purāṇa-guhyaṁ, this mysterious Bhagavatam, nothing else. This is our way. This is Bhagavat way and this is the Supreme way. We don’t want to hear any other things. Please, this is our clear cut position.

Krishna willing we shall hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
