Surrender unto His Lotus Feet - Part 4

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Surrender unto His Lotus Feet" wherein we were meditating on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.6.7 and about elephant king Gajendra surrendering to Lord's lotus feet when being attacked by crocodile in the lake. Now we shall see further.

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 8.2.32 Gajendra says

na mām ime jñātaya āturaṁ gajāḥ
kutaḥ kariṇyaḥ prabhavanti mocitum
grāheṇa pāśena vidhātur āvṛto
’py ahaṁ ca taṁ yāmi paraṁ parāyaṇam

The other elephants, who are my friends and relatives, could not rescue me from this danger. What then to speak of my wives? They cannot do anything. It is by the will of providence that I have been attacked by this crocodile, and therefore I shall seek shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is always the shelter of everyone, even of great personalities.

Gajendra could see that although his family members and friends tried their best to pull him out of the water, they could not succeed. When the male elephants who are supposed to be more stronger than the female elephants, could not save him, what can he expect from his wives? So he understood that the suffering he is undergoing is because of will of providence. Many a times in life, people feel more miserable - not for the actual misery which they are undergoing, but for the fact that their near and dear ones failed to help them in times of need. But harsh reality is that when the misery is by will of providence, sanctioned by Supreme Lord, one cannot get any help from anyone.

By blaming others, grudging, complaining or cribbing - our miseries only mutliply. Our miseries do not reduce, because blame would result in counterblame and would lead into quarrel, misunderstanding and loss of peace of mind. Our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj very nicely says, "The man himself, the individual himself or herself, he is the impediment to himself or herself. Nobody is the reason. Really if we deeply think, we are at mistake and Bhāgavatam says, "if there is any difficulty, blame yourself so that matter ends." But we don’t want to blame ourselves, we blame others. So blaming and counter blaming goes on. Nobody wants to blame himself or herself. This is very clear and that’s why the material difficulties linger on, they will never end for us. Our life is full of distress."

The best thing to do is to surrender unto Supreme Lord as He is "paraṁ parāyaṇam" - transcendental shelter for everyone including Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma. In his wonderful purport to the above verse Srila Prabhupada says, "Those who try to be happy without taking shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are mūḍhas, rascals. Na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ. Those who are the lowest of men refuse to take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness because they think that they will be able to protect themselves without Kṛṣṇa’s care. This is their mistake."

So the lesson to be learnt from Gajendra is that instead of blaming our kith and kin for the failures and miseries we face in our life, instead of wasting our time and energy in blaming others, we should surrender unto the Supreme Lord. After knowing that Krishna is the Supreme shelter, if we either neglect or hesitate to surrender unto Krishna, then. we are the greatest fools.

Krishna wiling we shall meditate further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
