Surrender unto His Lotus Feet - Part 8

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Surrender unto His Lotus Feet" wherein we were meditating on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.6.7 and about elephant king Gajendra surrendering to Lord's lotus feet when being attacked by crocodile in the lake. In the last offering we saw the verse 8.3.2 wherein Gajendra glorified the potency of Lord, Whose presence makes everything lively. Lord is also the Supreme controller and is original seed of everything.

Now we shall see further.

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 8.3.3 Sri Gajendra prays as follows.

yasminn idaṁ yataś cedaṁ
yenedaṁ ya idaṁ svayam
yo ’smāt parasmāc ca paras
taṁ prapadye svayambhuvam

The Supreme Godhead is the supreme platform on which everything rests, the ingredient by which everything has been produced, and the person who has created and is the only cause of this cosmic manifestation. Nonetheless, He is different from the cause and the result. I surrender unto Him, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is self-sufficient in everything.

Offering obeisances by his words, in this verse he glorifies Krishna as

1) yasminn idaṁ - the basic platform on which the universe rests; Lord Krishna says to Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita verse 7.7 mayi sarvam idaṁ protaṁ sūtre maṇi-gaṇā iva - Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread. The thread is not visible in the pearl necklace. But without the thread, necklace is not possible. Likewise we cannot see Krishna because of our limited senses and imperfections, but we can very well realise that everything rests on Him. Just like how He is present in each one of us as Supersoul, He enters into each of the Universe also. Only because of His presence, planets, sun, moon etc are all not colliding against each other

2) yataś cedaṁ - the ingredient from which the cosmic manifestation is produced. In Second Canto Chapter 7, we find Brahmaji while explaining about the Supremacy of Lord Krishna admits that when he was assigned the service of creation of this material cosmos, in the beginning he took all the ingredients from the Virat form of the Lord.

3) yenedam - by whom this cosmic manifestation is created and maintained. Krishna is the primary creator and maintainer of this whole cosmos. In this world to build a small house and maintain it for few years itself is a herculean task for us. But Lord effortlessly creates and maintains the whole cosmos.

In Bhagavad Gita seed verse Krishna says -

ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavo
mattaḥ sarvaṁ pravartate
iti matvā bhajante māṁ
budhā bhāva-samanvitāḥ

I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts.

Gajendra being a wise elephant is rendering his hertfelt prayers unto the Lord.

4) ya idaṁ svayam - cause of this cosmic manifestation.
5) yo ’smāt parasmāc paras - is transcendental or different from the cause and the effect

Krishna says in Gita 9.4 - By Me, in My unmanifested form, this entire universe is pervaded. All beings are in Me, but I am not in them.

6) svayambhuvam - unto the supreme self-sufficient. Lord is complete - purna. He is not in need of any of our services. Yet like a loving father accepting the tiny gifts of his child, Lord mercifully accept our services.

Krishna willing we shall meditate further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
