Surrender unto His Lotus Feet - Part 10

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Surrender unto His Lotus Feet" wherein we were meditating on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.6.7 and about elephant king Gajendra surrendering to Lord's lotus feet when being attacked by crocodile in the lake. In the last offering we saw the verse 8.3.4 wherein Gajendra offered his obeisances to the Lord Who is aviddha-dṛk - sees everything all the time and is sakshi witness for all that is happening in the cosmos. He is self-sufficient and by His own potency makes the cosmic manifestation visible and invisible.

Now we shall see next prayer.

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 8.3.5 Gajendra prays

kālena pañcatvam iteṣu kṛtsnaśo
lokeṣu pāleṣu ca sarva-hetuṣu
tamas tadāsīd gahanaṁ gabhīraṁ
yas tasya pāre ’bhivirājate vibhuḥ

In due course of time, when all the causative and effective manifestations of the universe, including the planets and their directors and maintainers, are annihilated, there is a situation of dense darkness. Above this darkness, however, is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I take shelter of His lotus feet.

Gajendra glorifies the Lord as vibhuḥ - the Supreme - Who abhivirājate shines or continues to exist even after the annihiliation of the planets and their director. Lord is eternally present and He has no beginning or end. To help us understand how Krishna shines above the darkness after annihiliation of the cosmos, His Divine Grace in his purport gives the nice example of sun. His Divine Grace says, "When everything disappears by the influence of His energy, the cosmic situation is one of dense darkness. The Supreme Lord, however, is the sunshine, as confirmed in the Vedic mantras: āditya-varṇaṁ tamasaḥ parastāt. In our daily experience, when we on earth are in the darkness of night, the sun is always luminous somewhere in the sky. Similarly, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the supreme sun, always remains luminous, even when the entire cosmic manifestation is annihilated in due course of time. In the seed verses of Srimad Bhagavatam 2.9.33 Lord Krishna says to Brahmaji,

aham evāsam evāgre
nānyad yat sad-asat param
paścād ahaṁ yad etac ca
yo ’vaśiṣyeta so ’smy aham

Brahmā, it is I, the Personality of Godhead, who was existing before the creation, when there was nothing but Myself. Nor was there the material nature, the cause of this creation. That which you see now is also I, the Personality of Godhead, and after annihilation what remains will also be I, the Personality of Godhead.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu while glorifying the process of devotional service in Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya leela verse 22.31 says

kṛṣṇa — sūrya-sama; māyā haya andhakāra
yāhāṅ kṛṣṇa, tāhāṅ nāhi māyāra adhikāra

Kṛṣṇa is compared to sunshine, and māyā is compared to darkness. Wherever there is sunshine, there cannot be darkness. As soon as one takes to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, the darkness of illusion (the influence of the external energy) will immediately vanish.

Our lives will also brighten when we take shelter of the Supreme sun Krishna. Our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj says that no matter how one looks, the moment he or she takes to process of Krishna consciousness, starts wearing tilak and chants Krishna's names and begins to recite shlokas, then immediately the faces become bright. His Divine Grace also very nicely says in the purport to the above verse, "When a person is Kṛṣṇa conscious, he continuously hears about Kṛṣṇa, thinks about Him, worships Him and serves Him as a devotee. If he remains in Kṛṣṇa consciousness in this way, the darkness of māyā certainly will not be able to touch him."

So may we always take shelter of the eternal Supreme Lord, Whose presence will drive away all the darkness from our lives.

Krishna willing we shall meditate further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
