Surrender unto His Lotus Feet - Part 14

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Surrender unto His Lotus Feet" wherein we were meditating on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.6.7 and about elephant king Gajendra surrendering to Lord's lotus feet when being attacked by crocodile in the lake. In the last offering we saw the verse 8.3.8 wherein Gajendra said that Krishna is the Supreme Transcendence and He has no material birth, activities, name, form, qualities or faults.

Now we shall see next prayer.

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 8.3.9 Gajendra prays

tasmai namaḥ pareśāya
brahmaṇe ’nanta-śaktaye
nama āścarya-karmaṇe

 He has immense potency, and in various forms, all free from material contamination, He acts wonderfully. He is therefore the Supreme Brahman. I offer my respects to Him.

In this verse Gajendra glorifies the Lord as

1. paratranscendental; Lord is transcendental to all material laws. Nothing material touches Him. To help us understand the meaning of transcendence, our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj used to give a nice example. Maharaj said just like how an aeroplane is not controlled by the traffic rules on the road and therefore need not stop for red light signal, Krishna is not controlled by the rules of the material world. In the previous verse also, Gajendra said that Lord has no material name, form, birth or activities. His Names, pastimes are all transcendental and that is why unlike mundane news, news about Krishna is ever-fresh and people always look forward to hear about the same pastime again and again.

2. īśāyawho is the supreme controller; Krishna is the Supreme controller. All others who claim to be controllers in the material world must know that all their propensity to control something in this material world is also coming from Krishna. We are just trustees of whatever people, place, powers or things He has blessed us. The moment He decides to withdraw the powers endowed on us, we become powerless. We can't even control our own body, once it begins detroirating by disease and death.

3. brahmaṇewho is the Supreme Brahman (Parabrahman);

4. ananta-śaktayewith unlimited potency; We are all limited. But there is no limit for Lord's potencies so much so even Anantasesh Who has been glorifying the Lord for so many millions of year is not able to completely glorify Him.

5. arūpāyapossessing no material form;

6. uru-rūpāya — possessing various forms as incarnations

7. āścarya-karmaṇe — whose activities are wonderful. Lord's activities in the spiritual world as well as material world are all wonderdful. Maharaj used to give the example of this human body as to how this body which is also one of the many creations done by the Supreme Lord is also very wonderful. Maharaj says, "We eat white rice, yellow dhal and brown chappati, but our blood is red in colour. Cows eat green grass, but cows' milk is white." So all these are  āścarya-karmaṇe.

Krishna willing we shall meditate further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
