Surrender unto His Lotus Feet - Part 15

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Surrender unto His Lotus Feet" wherein we were meditating on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.6.7 and about elephant king Gajendra surrendering to Lord's lotus feet when being attacked by crocodile in the lake. In the last offering we saw the verse 8.3.9 wherein Gajendra offers his obeisances unto the Lord Who has unlimited potency, Whose deeds are all wonderful and Who is free from all contamination.

Now we shall see next prayer.

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 8.3.10 Gajendra prays

nama ātma-pradīpāya
sākṣiṇe paramātmane
namo girāṁ vidūrāya
manasaś cetasām api

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the self-effulgent Supersoul, who is the witness in everyone’s heart, who enlightens the individual soul and who cannot be reached by exercises of the mind, words or consciousness.

Gajendra offers his obeiances unto Lord Who is

i)  ātma-pradīpāya unto Him who is self-effulgent or who gives enlightenment to the living entities;

Lord is self-effulgent. In the solar system, the sun is the source of light for all planets. But Krishna is the source of light not only for the sun, moon and other luminaries, but for the entire cosmos. It is the effulgence from the Lord's transcendental body, that illuminates the luminaries in the cosmos.  In his wonderful purport to the above verse Srila Prabhupada says, "The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, cannot be understood by the individual soul through mental, physical or intellectual exercises. It is by the grace of the Supreme Personality of Godhead that the individual soul is enlightened."

In Isopanishad Mantra 15

hiraṇmayena pātreṇa
satyasyāpihitaṁ mukham
tat tvaṁ pūṣann apāvṛṇu
satya-dharmāya dṛṣṭaye

O my Lord, sustainer of all that lives, Your real face is covered by Your dazzling effulgence. Kindly remove that covering and exhibit Yourself to Your pure devotee.

Also Lord alone can dispel the darkness of ignorance present in all our hearts. So in both ways He is ātma-pradīp In his puport to the above verse

ii) sākṣiṇe parama-ātmane — who is situated in everyone’s heart as Supreme Soul, the Supersoul, as a witness.
We can never cheat the Lord for He is always watching us and is the closest person Who is mercifully traveling with us life-after-life, even if we ignore Him or forget Him or do not accept His presence.

iii) girām vidūrāya manasaḥ  cetasām api - Who is impossible to reach by words, by the mind or by consciousness;
We can approach the Lord only by devotion and by His causeless mercy and He can neither be known, understood or reached by our words, mind or consciousness. In Bhagavad Gita seed verses 10.10 and 11 Lord says

teṣāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ
bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam
dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ taṁ
yena mām upayānti te

teṣām evānukampārtham
aham ajñāna-jaṁ tamaḥ
nāśayāmy ātma-bhāva-stho
jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā

To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.

So on this auspicious occasion of Deepavali - festival of lights let us pray to Srila Gurudev and Srila Prabhupada so that we don't become slaves of our material mind and consciousnes, but be engaged in loving devotional service.

Krishna willing we shall meditate further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
