Surrender unto His Lotus Feet - Part 25

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Surrender unto His Lotus Feet" wherein we were meditating on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.6.7 and about elephant king Gajendra surrendering to Lord's lotus feet when being attacked by crocodile in the lake. In the last offering we saw the verse 8.3.18 wherein Gajendra says that those who are too attached to material way of life, cannot attain the Supreme Lord, Who is not contaminated by three modes of material nature, Who is reservoir of enlightenment. Who is worshiped by pure devotees in the core of their hearts.

In verse 8.3.19 Gajendra prays

yaṁ dharma-kāmārtha-vimukti-kāmā
bhajanta iṣṭāṁ gatim āpnuvanti
kiṁ cāśiṣo rāty api deham avyayaṁ
karotu me ’dabhra-dayo vimokṣaṇam

After worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead, those who are interested in the four principles of religion, economic development, sense gratification and liberation obtain from Him what they desire. What then is to be said of other benedictions? Indeed, sometimes the Lord gives a spiritual body to such ambitious worshipers. May that Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is unlimitedly merciful, bestow upon me the benediction of liberation from this present danger and from the materialistic way of life.

Gajendra glorifies the Lord as adabhra-dayah - Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is unlimitedly merciful. This is one other quality, which Gajendra keeps glorifying repeatedly in different ways. Indeed by this specific quality, Lord wins the hearts of everyone. Gajendra says how even when people approach Him with material desires, Lord not only fulfills them, but also grants them spiritual body. Dhruva Maharaj left for forest to see Krishna and seek the benediction of a greater position than his father. But Lord being unlimiredly merciful, sent Him a wonderful spiritual master like Narada Muni and by following his instructions, Dhruva could attain not only the Dhruva loka, but also love of Godhead

In Damodar leela also Lord being extremely merciful, gave the opportunity to two sons of Kubera to see all His childhood pastimes that He enacted in the court-yard of Nanda Maharaj, although they were entrapped in the body of 2 Yamalarjuna trees. In order to keep up the promise of His dear devotee Narada, Lord also dragged the grinding mortar between the two trees and by His transcendental touch, Nalakuvera and Manigriva got their original body and more importantly love for Krishna. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 5.19.27, the demigods pray

satyaṁ diśaty arthitam arthito nṛṇāṁ
naivārthado yat punar arthitā yataḥ
svayaṁ vidhatte bhajatām anicchatām
icchāpidhānaṁ nija-pāda-pallavam

The Supreme Personality of Godhead fulfills the material desires of a devotee who approaches Him with such motives, but He does not bestow benedictions upon the devotee that will cause him to demand more benedictions again. However, the Lord willingly gives the devotee shelter at His own lotus feet, even though such a person does not aspire for it, and that shelter satisfies all his desires. That is the Supreme Personality’s special mercy.

So Gajendra also very humbly request the Lord to liberate him from the clutches of crocodile, but also from materialistic way of life.

Krishna willing we shall meditate further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
