Surrender unto His Lotus Feet - Part 26

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Surrender unto His Lotus Feet" wherein we were meditating on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.6.7 and about elephant king Gajendra surrendering to Lord's lotus feet when being attacked by crocodile in the lake. In the last offering we saw the verse 8.3.19 wherein Gajendra glorifies the unlimitedly merciful for granting the benediction of rewarding spiritual body to even those who don't hanker for the same.

In verse 8.3.20 Gajendra prays

ekāntino yasya na kañcanārthaṁ
vāñchanti ye vai bhagavat-prapannāḥ
aty-adbhutaṁ tac-caritaṁ sumaṅgalaṁ
gāyanta ānanda-samudra-magnāḥ

Unalloyed devotees, who have no desire other than to serve the Lord, worship Him in full surrender and always hear and chant about His activities, which are most wonderful and auspicious. Thus they always merge in an ocean of transcendental bliss. Such devotees never ask the Lord for any benediction.

This is a very nice verse in which Gajendra is explaining what is the benediction desired by pure devotees of the Lord. He uses the word ekāntinah - those whose only desire is to serve the Lord. They are bhagavat-prapannāḥ - fully surrendered unto the lotus feet of the Lord. Such devotees always engage in hearing and chanting the most wonderful and auspicious activities of the Lord - aty-adbhutaṁ tac-caritaṁ sumaṅgalaṁ and thereby merge in ocean of transcendental bliss - gāyanta ānanda-samudra-magnāḥ.

To be engaged in devotional service of the Lord is the greatest benediction in life. And to chant, sing and hear the glories of the Lord is the greatest fortune. The bliss obtained by engaging in this service cannot be got by chanting, singing or hearing any other mundane news. Krishna Himself declares in the seed verse of Bhagavad Gita - verse 10.9

mac-cittā mad-gata-prāṇā
bodhayantaḥ parasparam
kathayantaś ca māṁ nityaṁ
tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca

The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.

Satyavrata Muni also prays in Damodarashtakam verse 3

itidrik sva-lilabhir ananda-kunde
sva-ghosham nimajjantam akhyapayantam
tadiyeshita-jneshu bhaktair jitatvam
punah prematas tam satavritti vande

By such childhood pastimes as this He is drowning the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy, and is revealing to those devotees who are absorbed in knowledge of His supreme majesty and opulence that He is only conquered by devotees whose pure love is imbued with intimacy and is free from all conceptions of awe and reverence. With great love I again offer my obeisances to Lord Damodara hundreds and hundreds of times.

So pure devotees of the Lord do not hanker for any other benediction.

Krishna willing we shall meditate further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
