Surrender unto His Lotus Feet - Part 32

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering, "Surrender unto His Lotus Feet" wherein we were meditating on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.6.7 and about elephant king Gajendra surrendering to Lord's lotus feet when being attacked by crocodile in the lake. In the last offering we saw the verse 8.3.27 wherein Gajendra says that darshan of the Yogeshwara Krishna is possible only when our hearts are purified. Now we shall see further.

In SB 8.3.28 Gajendra prays,

namo namas tubhyam asahya-vega-
prapanna-pālāya duranta-śaktaye
kad-indriyāṇām anavāpya-vartmane

My Lord, You are the controller of formidable strength in three kinds of energy. You appear as the reservoir of all sense pleasure and the protector of the surrendered souls. You possess unlimited energy, but You are unapproachable by those who are unable to control their senses. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You again and again.

In this prayer Gajendra glorifies the following qualities of the Lord

1) śakti-trayāya - unto the Supreme Person, who has threefold potencies; Lord is the embodiment of the potencies sat-cit-anannda (eternity, bliss and knowledge). All the potencies (external, internal and marginal) are under His control.

2) prapanna-pālāya - unto the Supreme, who gives shelter to the surrendered;  Krishna never ever forsakes those who surrender unto Him. All other shelters are temporary. Sometimes in the material world, even after surrendering, the person to whom we surrender, may not give us shelter. But Lord is so kind that He readily gives us shelter. Also when we are in a position to help others, if the other person had been inimical to us, then we really think twice if we should help them. But Lord is so magnanimous that even if people inimical to Him are ready to surrender, He is willing to help them. In Valmiki Ramayana 6.18.33, Lord Rama says

sakṛd eva prapanno yas tavāsmīti ca yācate
abhayaṁ sarvadā tasmai dadāmy etad vrataṁ mama

If any living being takes shelter of Me even once, saying, "I am Yours", then I award that person freedom from all fear. This is My solemn pledge.

When Vibhishana come to surrender unto Lord Ram, Sugriva and others are bit doubtful whether he is coming as a spy from Ravana's side. But at that time Lord Ram tells them that even if Ravana comes to surrender, Lord will accept him. So when we surrender unto His lotus protection is guaranteed.

3) duranta-śaktaye - One Who posses energies that are difficult to overcome. Lord has unlimited potency. So no energy can overcome Him. In his incaranation as Nara Narayan Rshi, when the damsels of heaven try to disturb His penance, they become very bewildered as so many beautiful damsels will appear from the Lord's body. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 2.7.6 Lord Brahmaji says

dharmasya dakṣa-duhitary ajaniṣṭa mūrtyāṁ
nārāyaṇo nara iti sva-tapaḥ-prabhāvaḥ
dṛṣṭvātmano bhagavato niyamāvalopaṁ
devyas tv anaṅga-pṛtanā ghaṭituṁ na śekuḥ

To exhibit His personal way of austerity and penance, He appeared in twin forms as Nārāyaṇa and Nara in the womb of Mūrti, the wife of Dharma and the daughter of Dakṣa. Celestial beauties, the companions of Cupid, went to try to break His vows, but they were unsuccessful, for they saw that many beauties like them were emanating from Him, the Personality of Godhead.

So when one takes shelter of such a powerful Lord, then formidable enemies like lust, anger and greed also could be overcome.

4) kad-indriyāṇām anavāpya- Who is unattainable by those who are unable to control their senses. Attachment to material things and advancement in devotional service go ill together. So without sense control, we cannot dream to even have a glimpse of spiritual world. Lord Rshabadev advises in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 5.5.1

tapo divyaṁ putrakā yena sattvaṁ
śuddhyed yasmād brahma-saukhyaṁ tv anantam

One should engage in penance and austerity to attain the divine position of devotional service. By such activity, one’s heart is purified, and when one attains this position, he attains eternal, blissful life, which is transcendental to material happiness and which continues forever.

On our own it is not possible for us to fight against the three formidable enemies - lust, anger and greed. But by surrendering unto the Lord everything becomes simple. To such glorious Lord, Gajendra offers his respectful obeisances.

Krishna willing we shall meditate further on this topic in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
