Do not Make Mockery of your Devotional Service - Part 3

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

This is in continuation of the translation of a wonderful Hindi Bhagavatam class given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj in Surat on 17th September 1998, on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 9.4.41. In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj, that

1) One's speech reveals his nature and the best way to purify speech is to use in recitation of scriptures.
2) If we sit with Srila Prabhupada and study his books, we will be enlightened in our hearts.

Now we shall hear further.

Maharaj: (Giving a practical example, for us to understand the word mattam or "intoxication", Maharaj says) Then our mason (kadiyaa) do you understand the word kadiyaa? You understand Gujarati right? What is the meaning for kadiyaa? -  You are sitting in Gujarat and speaking through kichdi. (laughter) Learn Gujarati. Who are referred as kadiyaa?

Devotees: We don’t know Maharaj.

Maharaj: mimics (We don’t know Maharaj.) You are sitting in Gujarat and simply eating kichdi and don’t know anything. Who will tell now? Who are called as kadiyaa. Tell, you please tell.

Devotee: One who repairs the house.

Maharaj: No. not one who repairs the house. One who constructs the house, who applies the cement. Tomorrow if you also start applying cement, then you will become a mason - kadiyaa. Our masons here are quite hefty…more fat..double than you. And he does very less work. He needs two female workers also and we have to pay daily 150 Rs or 250 Rs per head.  So he needs two women workers. He gives them 90 Rs per head and 150 for him. So how much it amounts to? I told him. "Even if you pay me half the charges, I will apply cement all day." (laughter)  “No, no. my work is so great.” This is the pramattam or intoxication with work. He doesn’t do any wok. But just speaks like (laughter)  And he keeps 8 people for work and if we go in the evening, then they would not have put cement even for 25 bricks. I told him, “What were the 8 people doing all day?” He replied, “You just lift the stone and see.” I told him, “If I could have lifted the stone, why am I employing 8 people?"  (laughter) This is pramattam. The people who do praise themselves, glorifies themselves, they come under the category of pramattam

And then comes the third type - and in Bhagavatam terms we tell that as “unmattam.”  mattam, pramattam and unmattam. One who comes under unmattam category, he is insane. In English, they call such persons as insane. He is a mad person. First one is fool. Fool is fool. Second type of person is intoxicated. And he is mad for some time. But one who is unmattam, he becomes completely mad.  And in that madness what people do?  You might have seen. Even while walking on the road, they will be moving their fingers. They would be remembering how in the past, they were overseer. “How I used to order people? Keep this there. Carry this and keep it there.” Whatever work he had done in the past, he is reminded of that. By remembering these things, his loses his energy, he loses his time. Time is always working on us. And we always keep remembering that, “we did this, we did that.”  All these are signs of destruction.

Krishna willing we shall hear more nectar from Maharaj in the suibsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev
