Do not Make Mockery of your Devotional Service - Part 5

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

This is in continuation of the translation of a wonderful Hindi Bhagavatam class given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj in Surat on 17th September 1998, on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 9.4.41. In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj, that the words from our mouth should be from Vedic scriptures and as long as He wants to keep us alive, He will make all the arrangements.

Now we shall hear further.

Maharaj: We are just instruments. nimitta-mātraṁ bhava savya-sācin (BG 11.33) He is telling Arjuna, “I have already killed these people. You just become My instrument. Without you also, they are already dead.” This is internal potency of the Lord.  And when Arjuna tells the Lord, “I want to see the army - both sides, the people with whom we have to fight”, Arjun was mad at that time. He was thinking that he is fighting and he is killing. And due to that he was telling, “these people are my friends and relatives. I don’t want to kill them. I will sit down. I will give up my gāndiva bow. It is better to survive by begging than to engage in this ghastly warfare.” Then Lord made him understand that, “You are mad. Thats why you are thinking that you are doing everything.” We also, when our insanity increases, when our madness increases, we start thinking that we are feeding these 25 people. This is insanity. When sanity comes, then we understand the truth. Lord is known as Samanjas. We are in harmony, when we understand that everything is done by Him. "I am not doing anything." When we understand this, that is sanity. Then we never become mad. We must always be humble.

tṛṇād api su-nīcena taror iva sahiṣṇunā
amāninā māna-dena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ

We saw this yesterday. So when this thing happens, then we understood the meaning for water and fasting yesterday. So with that understanding, we will proceed now. Now Ambarish Maharaj has drunk water and this Durvasa Muni is a great mystic. Whatever he is, he was a powerful yogi. He was incarnation of Lord Shiva. And being an incarnation of Lord Shiva, he had anger also. He used to become angry for even small things. The anger of Lord Shankar is different. But when ordinary people become angry, that is not correct. We cannot imitate Shankar. The devotees of Lord Shankar say, “I am devotee of Shankar and so I am angry.” Arey, you took the quality of anger from Shankar. Shankarji had drunk poison for the well-being of others. Why don’t you take that? "I am Shankar’s devotee. Please give me some poison too.” Whatever is convenient for us, we take that alone from Shankar and what we can’t do, we leave that. So we should not do like that. Please don’t imitate great personalitiesDon’t try to do whatever they do. But listen to them. Shankar has given such a great wisdom, but we keep that aside and we take the pipe (used for smoking tobacco)  and try to see Shankar in the smoke. Many of them are sitting in Himalayas like this.

So when we understand this, then we can understand about how Ambarish being a Vaishnava, was very humble. He was very humble. Otherwise, he being an emperor of the world, Durvasa Muni was nothing in front of him. When Durvasa became angry Ambarish Maharaj could have imprisoned him and Durvasa would have sat squeaking in the jail. He could have done that. But he did not do that, because that is not the job of a Vaishnava.  S.B-1.18.48 says, nāsya tat pratikurvanti tad-bhaktāḥ prabhavo ’pi hi. This is the teaching of Bhagavatam. nāsya tat pratikurvanti. If someone harms us, nāsya tat pratikurvanti - We do not counteract. We do not counteract and in last line, Bhagavatam says, “tad-bhaktāḥ prabhavo ’pi hi” - The Lord’s devotees, in spite of being powerful, do not counteract.

Krishna willing we shall hear more nectar from Maharaj in the suibsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev
