Do not Make Mockery of your Devotional Service - Part 9

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

This is in continuation of the translation of a wonderful Hindi Bhagavatam class given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj in Surat on 17th September 1998, on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 9.4.41. In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj, that  we should study Bhagavatam daily and also keep our surroundings clean.

Now we shall hear further from Maharaj.

Maharaj: (Beginning to explain the verse SB 9.4.41 Maharaj says) So see in 1 line there are 1,2,3,4 words and we can easily remember these 4 words. In these 4 words, 1 or 2 words are from our own language. So it is convenient for us. These English people and other foreigners, don’t have this facility as they don’t know our languages. So they have to put more effort. But if we do little endeavour, then we can easily understand. See iti means -"like this”; apaḥ means water; water is known as apaḥ; prāśya means “after drinking” and rājarṣiś - we know they are people who are not only kings, but are also saintly. First he is a saint. Before becoming a king, he is sent to do austerities. We have Pracetas, whose father Prachinabarhi was a great emperor. So he knew that, “these Pracetas would have to rule after me.” So initially he sent them to forests - “Go and wherever you find some saintly mahatma, please learn from him. And whatever he says, please do that austerity. And then come to me. So they met Lord Shiva. So Lord Shiva inquired them, “Where are you going?” They replied, “to do austerities”. They were unable to answer what type of austerity. They didn’t know where they are going, where they are going to sit, for how long they are going to do austerities.  - they did not know anything. “Arey, you don’t know anything and you are going?” Then they asked, “But who are you?” “Lord Shiva”. “Oh if you are Lord Shiva, then you please tell us what to do.” (laughter). So they received transcendental knowledge from Him and they went under the water, under the waters of Tapi river and performed austerities for 1000s of years.

We don’t mean that tomorrow, we also go under the Tapi river. Then  we will not get the amount for life-membership. (laughter)  This is not required, but penance is.requested. Penance is required in life and this is the greatest penance today. To chant 16 rounds properly is the greatest penance in Kali-yug. This is a great penance. We don’t know about others, but we don’t care whether we have done 16 rounds. Once we were in Amsterdam. So there was a President there. You know when I went there, he said, “Very nice. I am very busy Maharaj." I told him, “You are not doing anything. So what are you busy with?” Then he said, “I have to chant 9018 rounds yet." I told, “Why 9018?”  He said, “Daily, I keep an account, if I can’t chant and then l keep the account of not chanted rounds." Daily we have to do 16 rounds. So he does 4 rounds some day, 2 rounds some day and then 14 rounds are pending for that day. So he had accumulated 9018 rounds like this. (laughter)  Then I said, "what are you doing? " He said,  “l am sorry." Then I said, “You just go for a week and chant your rounds and then come (laughter)” There is nobody there. Only 2-3 devotees were serving and it was a small center. At least poor fellow, he was keeping account. But we don’t bother to keep account (laughter). Poor fellow, he had noted that he has to do 9018 more rounds. What we do, day has gone, forget about the rounds…ya…ya..ya. And when we go to Krishna, Krishna also says, ya..ya…yaa… (laughter)   ye yathā māṁ prapadyante (laughter) So please do this greatest penance that you chant your 16 rounds properly.

Krishna willing we shall hear more nectar from Maharaj in the suibsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev
