Instructions by Simha Guru - Part 1

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

Today is the auspicious occasion of the appearance day of His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswathi Thakura who is also known as "Simha-Guru." Just like glories of Krishna are unlimited, the glories of His pure devotees are also unlimited. Like Krishna, pure devotees also never look for their glorification. But for our own purification, may we try to meditate on some of the wonderful instructions of Srila Bhaktisiddantha Saraswathi Prabhupada.

Our heartfelt thanks to our God-brother HG Svayam Spurathy Krishna Prabhuji for sharing these instructions of Simha-Guru with us.

His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswathy is the perfect example of perfect spiritual master and perfect disciple. And so the below instructions by His Divine Grace on how determined a disciple should be to serve his spiritual master are worth meditating.

A genuine disciple must possess firm determination and faith in his spiritual master, thinking,

1. I will serve my spiritual master and Lord Gauranga with utmost simplicity.

2. I will follow my spiritual master’s instructions, which have come down from the Supreme Lord.

3. I will never disobey my spiritual master’s orders under the influence of anyone in this world.

4. If following my spiritual master means I must become an animal or go to hell forever, I will never hesitate.

5. I will not follow anyone other than my spiritual master.

6. I will destroy the current of mundane thought by the strength of his instructions.

7. There is no knowledge or proper code of conduct in the fourteen worlds that weighs more than a particle of dust from the lotus feet of my spiritual master.

1. I will serve my spiritual master and Lord Gauranga with utmost simplicityMaterial qualifications, material conditions etc are never a prerequisite for serving Sri Guru or Gauranga. The only qualification required is the desire to serve Them with utmost simplicity - without a tinge of duplicity. In one of the conversation with devotees in Montreal, His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada glorifies his Guru Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswathy Prabhupada as follows.

"My Guru Maharaja was very great scholar, and his Guru Maharaja, from literary point of view, he could not even sign his name, Gaura-kisora dasa Babaji Maharaja. And Bhaktivinoda Thakura asked Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura to accept Gaura-kisora dasa Babaji Maharaja as his, as his spiritual master, that "You go and take your initiation from Gaura-kisora dasa Babaji Maharaja." So he thought that "I am a great scholar, and I am son of a magistrate, Bhaktivinoda Thakura, and great Vaisnava. He'll be very much pleased to accept me." Of course, he was very much pleased. But in the beginning he refused. He refused. Because... Of course, that is only show. He was not proud. Just to teach us. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati explained that "I was little proud. So I was thrice refused by Guru Maharaja," although he was the only disciple. So the scholarship is not a qualification of becoming devotee. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's teaching. Scholarship may help, but it is not necessary. Real necessary is that one should be humble and meek and follow the instruction of the spiritual master. This is real qualification."

Here we can see how Srila Bhaktisiddantha Sarawathy Thakura simply accepted his father's instruction to take initiation from Srila Gaurkishore dasa Babaji Maharaj and how with utter simplicity shares the reason why he was refused. Pride and envy are two qualities which we don't like to accept, even when we have them. But here we see Mahatmas like Srila Bhaktisiddantha Sarawathi Thakura - who has no tinge of such qualities, but genuinely feeling those as a disqualification for not being accepted in the first few attempts.

This pastimes also shows how determined he was right from day one to serve Sri Guru and Gauranga. Just because he was refused initiation, he did not give up. But with perseverance, prayers and patience, continued his attempts to seek the mercy of his spiritual master.

Krishna willing we shall try to meditate more on the other nstructions of Srila Bhakti Siddantha Saraswathi Thakura, in the subsequent offerings.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
