Instructions by Simha Guru - Part 5

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Instructions by Simha Guru" wherein we were trying to meditate on some of the wonderful instructions of Srila Bhaktisiddantha Saraswathi Prabhupada. In the previous offering, we meditated on the first instruction.

A genuine disciple must possess firm determination and faith in his spiritual master, thinking,

1. I will serve my spiritual master and Lord Gauranga with utmost simplicity.
2. I will follow my spiritual master’s instructions, which have come down from the Supreme Lord.
3. I will never disobey my spiritual master’s orders under the influence of anyone in this world.
4. If following my spiritual master means I must become an animal or go to hell forever, I will never hesitate.

Now we shall continue to see some more examples of devotees who have followed the below instruction.

4. If following my spiritual master means I must become an animal or go to hell forever, I will never hesitate.

Our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj used to narrate the pastime of how Kacha son of Brhaspati managed to get the amrta-sanjeevani mantra from Sukracarya, on the strength of obedience to his father Brhaspati.

Brhaspati was deva-guru and Sukracarya was guru for the demons. Once when Indra was not respectful to his Guru Brhaspati, the devatas lost all their power and opulence and at that point, since the demons were obedient to their Guru, they could win over the devatas. Once the devatas realised their mistake and sought forgivance from Brhaspati, they came to know that Sukracarya had the amrta-sanjeevani mantra using which he was able to bring back to life even the demons who were killed by them. When Brhaspati asked his son Kacha to go to Sukracharya and to learn the mantra, Kacha did not hesitate. Normally no-one would like to go to enemy camp, risking their life. But Kacha went there and requested Sukracarya to accept him as his disciple. Sukracarya knowing the inner motive of Kacha was determined that although externally he might accept Kacha as his disciple, he would never teach him the amrta-sanjeevani mantra.

But by will of providence, Sukracharya's daughter Devayani fell in love with Kacha, and every time the demons killed him, she used to go to her father and request him to bring him back to life. In every such return, Kacha requested Sukracarya to teach the mantra. But he refused. But Kacha never gave up. He boldly continued to stay there, knowing well that demons would attempt again and again to kill him.

In the final attempt, the demons killed Kacha, made him to paste and mixed the paste in a glass of wine and gave it to Sukracarya to drink. Then when Devayani came to her father seeking help, Sukracharya realized that if he uttered the mantra, his own life was in danger. At that time, Kacha from within stomach of Sukracharya spoke that the only way he could save both of them was by teaching the mantra so that once he came out of the stomach, he could teach it to Sukracarya again and bring him back to life. Having no other choice, Sukracarya did that and saved Kacha.

Maharaj said that when one is fully surrendered and determined to follow the instructions of spiritual master, then Krishna assures all protection in ways that are inconceivable to us. When Srila Prabhupada started the Hare Krishna movement in the United States, he used to train the people there in the process of bhakti and after some time, he used to send them to different states within the US and outside the US and ask them to start centres in different states and countries like UK, Japan, Russia, Germany etc. Though it was a foreign atmosphere for them, still by the strength of surrender and obedience to Srila Prabhupada, they could connect with local people there, start new centres, and pass on the gift of Krishna consciousness that they had received from Srila Prabhupada to them.

Whether it was carving Deities, stitching dress for Deities, constructing chariots for Rathayatra, preparing prasadam, distributing prasadam, editing books, printing them, printing "Back to Godhead" magazines, distributing books and magazines - all these services happened so nicely because of those devotees surrender to their spiritual master Srila Prabhupada and Srila Prabhupada's unwavering surrender to follow the instructions of Srila Bhakti Siddantha Saraswathi Thakura.

Krishna willing, we shall try to meditate more on the other instructions of Srila Bhakti Siddantha Saraswathi Thakura, in the subsequent offerings.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
