Instructions by Simha Guru - Part 7

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Instructions by Simha Guru" wherein we were trying to meditate on some of the wonderful instructions of Srila Bhaktisiddantha Saraswathi Prabhupada. In the previous offering, we meditated on the first instruction.

A genuine disciple must possess firm determination and faith in his spiritual master, thinking,

1. I will serve my spiritual master and Lord Gauranga with utmost simplicity.
2. I will follow my spiritual master’s instructions, which have come down from the Supreme Lord.
3. I will never disobey my spiritual master’s orders under the influence of anyone in this world.
4. If following my spiritual master means I must become an animal or go to hell forever, I will never hesitate.
5. I will not follow anyone other than my spiritual master.

Now we shall see further.

6. I will destroy the current of mundane thought by the strength of his instructions. In yesterday's offering we saw how we should not be misguided by others and always take the right shelter of Guru, sadhu and shastras. Most of the times we are misguided by our own mind. When we are not firmly holding on to lotus feet of Sri Guru and Gauranga, mind causes so much damage to ourselves as well as the people around. It is very rightly said that an idle mind is devil's workshop. In Bhagavad Gita verse 6.5 Lord Krishna says

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ
nātmānam avasādayet
ātmaiva hy ātmano bandhur
ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ

One must deliver himself with the help of his mind, and not degrade himself. The mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy as well.

Thinking, feeling, willing are all activities of the mind. When mind is not trained to be under shelter of Guru, sadhu and shastras, it will bombard is with so many mundane thoughts. Just like waves in ocean, there is no limit for the desires that arise out of mundane mind and all these thoughts, bewilders us, degrades us and keeps us in material bondage life after life, For every silli, stupid desire arising out of our mind, one material body is waiting for us. So we can imagine how untrained mind can keep us immersed in the ocean of material existence for millions and millions of birth.

On the contrary, when one takes shelter of instruction of one's spiritual master, even seemingly impossible  things become possible. For conditioned soul like us even chanting 16 rounds is a great struggle or austerity - but we can see how acaryas like Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswathi Thakura could chant 192 rounds daily for many years because of their surrender to Sri Guru and Gauranga. In Srimad Bhagavatam 5.11.17 Jada Bharat says to King Raghugana as to how to bridle the mind.

bhrātṛvyam enaṁ tad adabhra-vīryam
upekṣayādhyedhitam apramattaḥ
guror hareś caraṇopāsanāstro
jahi vyalīkaṁ svayam ātma-moṣam

This uncontrolled mind is the greatest enemy of the living entity. If one neglects it or gives it a chance, it will grow more and more powerful and will become victorious. Although it is not factual, it is very strong. It covers the constitutional position of the soul. O King, please try to conquer this mind by the weapon of service to the lotus feet of the spiritual master and of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Do this with great care.

His Divine Grace very nicely mentions in the purport, "There is one easy weapon with which the mind can be conquered — neglect. The mind is always telling us to do this or that; therefore we should be very expert in disobeying the mind’s orders. Gradually the mind should be trained to obey the orders of the soul. It is not that one should obey the orders of the mind. Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura used to say that to control the mind one should beat it with shoes many times just after awakening and again before going to sleep. In this way one can control the mind. This is the instruction of all the śāstras. If one does not do so, one is doomed to follow the dictations of the mind. Another bona fide process is to abide strictly by the orders of the spiritual master and engage in the Lord’s service. Then the mind will be automatically controlled."

Since we are incapable of beating the mind with shoes, it is better for us to simply abide by the instructions of the spiritual master and thereby save ourselves from the tantrums of the mind.

Krishna willing, we shall try to meditate more on the other instructions of Srila Bhakti Siddantha Saraswathi Thakura, in the subsequent offerings.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
