Instructions by Simha Guru - Part 9

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in conclusion of the previous offering titled, "Instructions by Simha Guru" wherein we were trying to meditate on some of the wonderful instructions of Srila Bhaktisiddantha Saraswathi Prabhupada. In the previous offering, we meditated on the sixth instruction.

A genuine disciple must possess firm determination and faith in his spiritual master, thinking,

1. I will serve my spiritual master and Lord Gauranga with utmost simplicity.
2. I will follow my spiritual master’s instructions, which have come down from the Supreme Lord.
3. I will never disobey my spiritual master’s orders under the influence of anyone in this world.
4. If following my spiritual master means I must become an animal or go to hell forever, I will never hesitate.
5. I will not follow anyone other than my spiritual master.
6. I will destroy the current of mundane thought by the strength of his instructions.
7. There is no knowledge or proper code of conduct in the fourteen worlds that weighs more than a particle of dust from the lotus feet of my spiritual master.

Now we shall meditate further on the 7th point.

7. There is no knowledge or proper code of conduct in the fourteen worlds that weighs more than a particle of dust from the lotus feet of my spiritual master.

In order to help us understand the power of dust of the lotus feet of pure devotees, in SB 11.14.16 Lord Krishna says,

nirapekṣaṁ muniṁ śāntaṁ nirvairaṁ sama-darśanam
anuvrajāmy ahaṁ nityaṁ pūyeyety aṅghri-reṇubhiḥ

With the dust of My devotees’ lotus feet I desire to purify the material worlds, which are situated within Me. Thus, I always follow the footsteps of My pure devotees, who are free from all personal desire, rapt in thought of My pastimes, peaceful, without any feelings of enmity, and of equal disposition everywhere.

Spiritual masters are always absorbed in Krishna's pastimes and without any expectation render service unto Him. They see Krishna in everyone and are not inimical to anyone. These qualities  make them so dear to Lord that He wishes to take the dust of lotus feer such devotees and purify Himself. The Lord is param-pavitram - Supremely pure.  Just to make us understand the purifying potency of the bhakta-aṅghri-reṇu, Lord  is teaching us by His own example. This also shows the loving relationship between the Lord  and His devotees. The devotees hanker to take the dust of Lord's lotus feet and always be in His shelter. The Lord in loving reciprocation always follows His devotees and is eager to take the dust of His devotees on His head.

Also Sri Prahlad Maharaj says to his father Sri Hiranyakashipu in Srimad Bhagavatam 7.5.32

naiṣāṁ matis tāvad urukramāṅghriṁ
spṛśaty anarthāpagamo yad-arthaḥ
mahīyasāṁ pāda-rajo-’bhiṣekaṁ
niṣkiñcanānāṁ na vṛṇīta yāvat

Unless they smear upon their bodies the dust of the lotus feet of a Vaiṣṇava completely freed from material contamination, persons very much inclined toward materialistic life cannot be attached to the lotus feet of the Lord, who is glorified for His uncommon activities. Only by becoming Kṛṣṇa conscious and taking shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord in this way can one be freed from material contamination.

Attraction to Lord Krishna, His name, form and pastimes are all possible only when we are cleansed of all material contamination. Since Lord is param pavitram - we can never go near Him, with all dirty things in our heart. So Prahlad Maharaj is making it clear to us that mahīyasāṁ pāda-rajo-’bhiṣekaṁ - Only when we smear ourselves with dust of lotus feet of pure devotees, take shelter and follow their instructions, we will become free from all anarthas and get taste for doing devotional service unto Supreme Lord.

In conclusion may we remember the golden words of Simha Guru, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarawathi Thakura - "Implicit obedience to the precepts laid by Srila Rupa Goswami, through the medium of spiritual master is wealth of our devotion."

We pray that we always remember and follow the instructions of His Divine Grace.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva
