Be Austere - Part 4

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the transcription of the class given by HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.19.4 in Sydney in the year 2003. In previous offering we heard from Maharaj that,

1. Real happiness does not depend upon anything material.
2. Sincerity of devotees forces Krishna to stay.
3. Causeless mercy of the Lord protects us always.

Now we can hear further.

4. Our mind concocts our miseries: Our day to day miseries are very petty miseries. They don't have any existence. Frankly speaking, the miseries don't have the factual existence. But we concoct that we are miserable. "At 4:30 am, I have to wake up. Oh, it is very difficult." The mind concocts that it is very difficult to get up and this way it becomes difficult. The mind concocts that, "yesterday you had a very hard day, do you want to die?" "No, I don't want to die." "You were standing the whole day and it was so cold." Day before yesterday, somebody told me the record of the cold was maximum and in the past ten years, there was no cold like this. "Oh, is it? Oh my body cannot take this." After hearing that for ten years there was no cold day like this, my body started aching. (laughter) There is no foundation for this. na rūpam asyeha tathopalabhyate nānto na cādir na ca sampratiṣṭhā (Bhagavad Gita 15.3), there is no beginning to this, there is no end to this, na ca sampratiṣṭhā, and there is no foundation to this argument. But the mind argues and we agree because we are fool number one. Please don't give in to this mind. Otherwise it will never allow you to be sincere in the quest for spiritual existence. And if you lag in the spiritual existence, there won't be cessation of birth and death. Again and again, repetition will be there, and that is what we are heading for.

We are unknowingly neglecting the reality and running after the unreality. So many reasons are there. Now here the Bharatiya people who came, can't sit for one hour in the temple. How to save them? For them to sit for one hour also, we have to dance in front of them, entertain them. Spiritual existence is not there. They have unlimited quest for unreality. Reality is austerity and when you come to this (Srimad Bhagavatam), you will understand it. "Yes, it is beautiful." As soon as we are away from this, then we are unhappy. You know, somewhere I read something nice about how we feel. Somebody was sentenced to death and the capital punishment was that they will chop off his head. That was the capital punishment. So he was led to the place where his head was to be chopped off and before chopping off the head, they informed him that he was released. He was so very happy, you know, so very happy and he was so ecstatic, that when they chopped his head off, his carcass walked nearly 10 – 100 yards. This is it. When you are really happy, the carcass will also walk. (laughter) His head was chopped off. He was so very ecstatic that, "I am free, am I? I have to go" and he walked off. As soon as we have quest, sincere quest, when we are really going to be finished, that is for certain, but our soul will immediately, within a moment, be in Goloka Vrndavan. Because of our happiness, spiritual happiness is there. And it does not have any condition - whether you have body or not, whether you have house or not, money or not. Anywhere you will be happy as it is unconditional.

Krishna willing we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Uma Prathap
