Be Austere - Part 6

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the transcription of the class given by HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.19.4 in Sydney in the year 2003. In previous offering we heard from Maharaj that,

1. Real happiness does not depend upon anything material.
2. Sincerity of devotees forces Krishna to stay.
3. Causeless mercy of the Lord protects us always.
4. Our mind concocts our miseries.
5. Spiritual happiness is unconditional.

Now we can hear further.

6. Remember the final day: The path of perfection frees one from all material attachment. Your whole life should be attached to this detachment, to achieve perfection in future. How to do it when you are already in it? yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam, (Bhagavad-Gita 2.50) it is an art and the art is very easy that you please remember your death. At the time of death, you are not going to take with you a needle, though it is very small. Yamaraj will not allow you to take your body, what to talk of bodily possessions. This is the philosophy, practical philosophy. There is no other way. Everything follows if we sincerely remember our end of life. Everything, everything follows. We never behave in a nasty way, we don't have any grabbing tendency, we don't have any cheating tendency, because we know that we are going. Only one mantra must be there that, "I am going, I am going, I am going. I am definitely going."  (Maharaj makes everyone repeat). This is the only mantra that is required. Please remember, "I am going, I am going, I am going, I am definitely going." This should be our Mahamantra, not Hare Krishna mantra (laughter). Please as soon as you know that you are going, then,

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Then, you will chant very sincerely. But if you think you are not going, then, "Forget this two hours (of chanting). Waste of time." Immediately the forgetting is there and that is the greatest illusion. If you don't forget death, then you are sincere. Death is a horrible experience and without experiencing death, we are afraid of it. Nobody of us has experienced death. Even then we are horrified by the idea because we have experienced death, since last so many species of existence. This is the only thing to be remembered and then continuous remembrance of the end of our life will put us on the right line.

Then we will not see the entertainment in the Hari katha also. Hari katha is Hari katha. It is austere. How can you be entertained by it? And those who try to entertain you through these topics of Hari, they are misled themselves and they are going to mislead you also. And eventually, because you don't have any idea of Hari, you will become completely sahajiya, and you come back home, and "O my son, my child, my sofa set, my house, my this, my that, my that." You stay in your house, but don't be the master of the house. Master of the house is somebody else (Krishna). Otherwise the houses would accompany the dead carcasses. Please, please. See the cheating propensity everywhere. We should be very intelligent enough because of the grace of Prabhupad, to recognize what is going on.

Krishna willing we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Uma Prathap
Abu Dhabi.
