Bhagavatam Gives Bliss - Part 2

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the transcription one of the previous offering titled, "Bhagavatam Gives Bliss" wherein we were hearing the nectarean class given by our beloved spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on Srimad Bhagavatam verse 11.7.10

jñāna-vijñāna-saṁyukta  ātma-bhūtaḥ śarīriṇām
ātmānubhava-tuṣṭātmā  nāntarāyair vihanyase

Being fully endowed with conclusive knowledge of the Vedas and having realized the ultimate purpose of such knowledge in practice, you will be able to perceive the pure self, and thus your mind will be satisfied. At that time you will become dear to all living beings, headed by the demigods, and you will never be hampered by any disturbance in life.

In the previous offering we heard from Maharaj about how humility is required for getting jñān and also importance of applying the obtained knowledge in our day to day lives. Now we shall hear further.

2. Lead a simple life: And then you become ātma-bhūtaḥ - self satisfied. You are satisfied with your own soul. So you will not hanker after artificial necessities. Because we have left the simple life style and complicating our life with artificial necessities, that is why there are disturbances in life. The  reason of disturbance is that we have left the natural course of life. That is why disturbances are there. Our forefathers were never disturbed. Their life style was very simple. No complications and because of this, their lives were completely God-centered. Except God there was nothing. And the result was that everything was produced in plenty. Simple life style was there. So everything was in plenty really. So much grains, so much wood was there. Now wood has become completely scarce and plastic is available. As soon as you leave the God-centric life, the scarcity starts. Sinful life will always lead you to scarcity and we are following a sinful life.

Becaue we are not ātma-bhūt, our attention is to our body - śarīra. We have pampered our body. But we don't have the idea that the body itself is asat - temporary. How long are you going to pamper that body? And by pampering our body, it becomes only unhealthy. By performing the austerities only, the body can be kept healthy.  You get up early in the morning and take cold showers. Formally they used to go to the rivers and take nice cold shower. The beauty of river water is that before 5'o clock, the river water is warm. But after 6'o clock it becomes cold. So early in the morning we used to get up and go to the river and the water in the river used to be warm. It was very easy to pour water on the body and it was not cold at all. It was healthy because in open air we are taking bath.

And now our bathrooms are completely closed and in closed bathrooms, we are doing a silly thing. Daily we apply the soap which is a chemical. Chemical and the bad stink - no air in our bathrooms. Due to this dirty air goes in our lungs and the effect is after bath also we don't feel fresh. We feel sick because of the dirty air in the lungs. Whereas if we go to the river, dirty air is not there at all. Even if you apply soap, it flows away with water. But soap was not used really. Chickpeas flour was used. So chickpeas flour had no chemicals in it. At the moment also, use chickpeas flour. Don't use soap too much and burn the skin. Soap has caustic soda and that has burning sensation.  So please try to avoid the soaps. Instead use chickpeas flour. That is enough. There is no need of anything else. May be once in a fortnight or once in a week, you may apply some soap. Or use some natural ingredients in the form of chickpeas flour. Formerly we were using black earth. Black earth was very antiseptic and cleansing. And there was no after effects at all. This is the point. Now everything is complicated and because everything is complicated, the result is disturbance.

Krishna willing we shall continue to hear more nectar from Maharaj in the subsequent offering.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
