Quality Matters - Not Quantity

Hare Krishna Prabhujis an Matajis,
Please accept my humble pranams. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to Srila Gurudev.

The usefulness of our lifetime is judged not by the number of years we spend in this planet, but by the quality of service which we performed during our stay. In Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 2, Chapter 1 verse 12, Srila Sukadev Goswami, in an encouraging manner informs King Parikshit -

kiṁ pramattasya bahubhiḥ parokṣair hāyanair iha
varaṁ muhūrtaṁ viditaṁ ghaṭate śreyase yataḥ

What is the value of a prolonged life which is wasted, inexperienced by years in this world? Better a moment of full consciousness, because that gives one a start in searching after his supreme interest.

Due to curse of the Brahmin boy, Parikshit Maharaj knew that he would die within the next 7 days and when he met Sukadeva Goswami, he inquired him humbly about how best he could spend these 7 days. In reply to his queries, the merciful spiritual master, Sukadev Goswami assured Maharaj Parikshit that there is nothing to worry about lifespan being decreased. He assured him that instead of living for thousands of years of Godless life, it is better to live a single moment with full consciousness. When we are engaging in any kind of service it is important for us to always remember this eternal truth - that quality matters more than quantity. When we remember this we would be able to perform our service whole heartedly in a better manner even when the time left out to complete the service is less.

In the purport, Srila Prabhupada has elaborated on few factors which degrade the quality of service performed. Time spent is useful if we engage in attentive japa, discussion of names, forms and glories of Lord and His pastimes. On the other hand it is highly condemned if we spend time in blaspheming devotees. We cannot superficially try to escape by saying that we never blaspheme devotees - but just have to tolerate when others come and talk such gossips. We have every right to request others not to waste our time as well as theirs. Even if the listeners are not willing to give up the gossip, if we are really serious of improving the quality of our life, we can always walk-out from such circumstances. When we honestly introspect, we would realise that nothing can obstruct our progress, if we are really dedicated. Srila Prabhupada very nicely instructs that -"A devotee should try to restrict the vilifier by cutting out his tongue, and being unable to do so, one should commit suicide rather than hear the blaspheming of the devotee of the Lord. The conclusion is that one should neither hear nor allow vilification of a devotee of the Lord."

Human life is a very rare and valuable asset and somehow by the mercy of Lord we have attained this life which is best suited for spiritual advancement. So without worrying about how long we would be alive, we should concentrate on improving the quality of our devotional service to Krishna.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
