Comparing Ourselves with Others

Hare Krishna devotees,
Please accept my dandavat pranams. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

The tendency in the material world especially modern days is to have a competitive spirit and to compare ourselves with others materially/spiritually. Personally I waste lot of time and energy by comparing me with others who have better material comforts, bigger flat, more money, more talents, lesser responsibilities and worries and fume with envy always. It is a very big and insurmountable problem for me. Even if we keep quiet sometimes, people around us fuel our envy by saying, "He's earning less than you and he's having a car and biggest flat. Why don't you go for the same? "Last week I had the opportunity to talk to Maharaj and when I asked about this, he gave a powerful answer, "This is due to lack of faith. Lack of Krishna consciousness gives rise to competitive spirit. We should be convinced that the position we're in is the best position for our spiritual development and Krishna's judgement is always perfect. We can always try to improve our situation and if doesn't work well, we don't care about it, because He is the Supreme controller and His judgement can never be wrong" . Then I asked, 'Maharaj, as long as our desires are fulfilled we don't compare. Only when our desires are unfufilled the mind starts comparing with everyone else". Maharaj very emphatically said, "If we are completely satisfied with Krishna then material loss or gain will not matter to us. We should learn to see Krishna everywhere and to become Krishna conscious is our only constitutional desire. Fulfillment of any other desire will not satisfy you and you SHOULD realize this".

While this comparing mentality is really sapping my vitality like anything, I came across the following verse from Bhagavad Gita 4th chapter which brings out the glory of spiritual knowledge and its application.

na hi jñānena sadṛśaṁ pavitram iha vidyate
tat svayaṁ yoga-saṁsiddhaḥ kālenātmani vindati

In this world, there is nothing so sublime and pure as transcendental knowledge. Such knowledge is the mature fruit of all mysticism. And one who has become accomplished in the practice of devotional service enjoys this knowledge within himself in due course of time.

The word 'hi' means certainly. In this material world nothing can be compared to the knowledge of the Supreme Lord.Comparison is usually done with entities of same kind which can be related. For example if we have 2 lakhs as our bank balance and if somebody else has 4 lakhs, the comparison is that his wealth is twice as our wealth. In this way, any material possession can be compared by a factor of multiplication. However the knowledge of the Supreme Lord and Atma cannot be compared with any amount of wealth /comforts in this material world just a multiplying any great number with zero will not give 1. Because zero and one cannot be equated at all by any manipulation. Any amount of material wealth or talents cannot fetch this knowledge which is obtainable only by the grace of God and his devotees. By the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and his followers, we've access to this sublime knowledge in the form of Bhagavad GIta, Srimad Bhagavatam. Also we've been given the process of yoga which is chanting of

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

which is best suited for the age of Kali. All that is needed is to be patiently execute devotional service(Kālena) and attain perfection (svayam yoga saṁsiddha) so that we can attain the supreme pleasure(ātmani vindati). Even after being gifted with the above treasure which cannot be compared with anything, I'm unable to realize its value and compare with others and feel envy.

I pray at the lotus feet of Srila Prabhupada, Gurudeva and all devotees so that I'll get rid of this comparison attitude and try to realise the gift of devotion.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Narahari Krishna das
