Simple Tips for Healthy Living

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble pranams. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

Couple of days back, while going through diary of my spiritual master HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj, came across a nice Hindi verse,

pair rakho garam
paet rakho naram
sir rakho ṭhanḍā
phir bhī āye vaidya
to māro ḍanḍā

Keep your feet warm (active). Keep your stomach light. (no over-eating). Keep your head cool. Even after following the above principles, if the doctor comes - beat him with a stick. In other words the above process is so fool-proof, that there would be no need to go to doctor.

1) pair rakho garam : Walking is a very good exercise for our body. Maharaj says that when we walk, by every step we take, we kick death that much far away. Vrajavasis - do not just mean the people who are born in Vrajbhumi. Vraja means to walk. Vrajavasis are those who use their legs to walk to Krishna's temples and places where Krishna-katha is held. So we must also follow their foot-steps.

2) paet rakho naram : Over-eating is one of the main cause for disease. Hence we must never eat heavily. It is said that we can fill half of our stomach with food, quarter portion with water and leave the remaining quarter with air. In Srimad Bhagavatam 3.27.8, Kapiladev while explaining how a devotee should be, says

yadṛcchayopalabdhena santuṣṭo mita-bhuṅ muniḥ
vivikta-śaraṇaḥ śānto maitraḥ karuṇa ātmavān

For his income a devotee should be satisfied with what he earns without great difficulty. He should not eat more than what is necessary. He should live in a secluded place and always be thoughtful, peaceful, friendly, compassionate and self-realized.

In this verse the word mita-bhuk refers to less eating. In his purport to the above verse Srila Prabhupada says, "This means that one should eat only as much as necessary to maintain the body and soul together. One should not be gluttonous to satisfy the tongue." He further adds that since food in the mode of goodness is only offered to Krishna, devotees should take only Krishna-prasad, there-by free themselves from the harmful effects of foods in mode of passion and ignorance.

3) sir rakho ṭhanḍā : Our mind should be free of pride, anger, envy and greed. Then only we can have space for Krishna and as a result have a cool mind. To keep our mind cool, it is also important

a) To have a clean surroundings. If things are not placed in orderly manner, it will easily agitate our mind.
b) Not to be anxious : When things don't happen in the way we want, we must remember that Krishna is supreme controller. He knows what is good for us and hence there is no need to be anxious.

We should remember that, by patience and peaceful attitude, we would be able to complete many things at a faster rate. But if we are agitated and angry, we would not be able to complete even a simplest thing.

To keep up our physical, mental and spiritual health, we should try to follow the above principles. Maharaj also advises that we should not go for unnecessary check-ups to the doctor, when our health is alright. Such check-ups are not only waste of time, energy and money, but they also lead to unwanted anxieties. Instead we should have full faith in Krishna that He would protect us under all circumstances and utilise the time and energy available in chanting His names lovingly.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Kalacakra Krsna das.
