Following the Instructions of Our Father

Dear Vaishnavas,
Hare Krishna. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

When we deal with our material relations like father, mother and so on, we tend to show a sense of contempt. We think,"Oh, my father will behave like this only. I know him well." This lack of respect is not appreciated by Krishna. In fact a father is a representative of Krishna. We should take their instructions into our hearts and try to execute them. Even if we fail in our attempt, the mere sincerity in trying to follow their instructions will make our life successful and both our father and Krishna will be pleased with us.

When the Pracetas were meditating on the Supreme Lord following the instruction of their father Prachinabarhishat, the Supreme Lord appeared before them and spoke the following words (SB 4.30.11) which are eternal truth:

yad yūyaṁ pitur ādeśam agrahīṣṭa mudānvitāḥ
atho va uśatī kīrtir lokān anu bhaviṣyati

Because you have with pleasure accepted within your hearts the orders of your father and have executed those orders very faithfully, your attractive qualities will be celebrated all over the world.

We have to execute the orders with faith that our father is giving us this instruction for our benefit only. And we should do it with great pleasure (muda anvitāḥ). Even if our father or mother is apparently not Krsna conscious (not fitting our bill as a devotee), the fact that they are our parents makes it all the more necessary for us to show respects to their words. Last but not the least, Krishna Himself says He is pleased when someone follows his father's order with great faith. What more do we want?

Respecting our elders, obeying their instructions, listening to them, all these are part of vedic culture. We, being very much part of the vedic culture, are naturally expected to follow the vedic way of life. By doing such things which may sound apparently insignificant for our devotional service, but which are actually important from Krishna's point of view, we can advance in leaps and bounds in devotional service.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Kalacakra Krsna das.
