Made For Each Other - Part 1

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

For every man/woman who wants to enter into family life, getting a suitable life partner is a very genuine desire. It is a great dream of man/woman to get a spouse who matches well with them in physical appearance, social, financial status, qualities, temperament and conduct. However in reality, this remains a distant dream in case of most of the couples because one does not get a life partner who matches in all these aspects. Even in case of love marriage, where the couple is expected to have a better understanding of each other before marriage, we see lot of misunderstanding cropping up after the marriage. Both in arranged and love marriages, before marriage whatever appears wonderful in the other person turns pale after marriage because the expectations we have on each other proves wrong in many cases. Right from trivial matters like difference in tastes (whether in food, dress or reading) to major ones in arriving at decisions in crucial family matters, lead to differences cropping up between couples. And with the result, their lives including those of their children, are affected adversely. So when we see couples with relatively less misunderstanding and reasonable matching in terms of physical features, we say they are "Made for each other".

In many cases, before marriage the couple think that they are 'made for each other', but in most cases after marriage they become 'mad at each other' with fury. The situation extends to divorce and in extreme cases, the husband and wife killing each other in the fight. So it is almost impossible to find out couples who are fully compatible with each other. In most cases, rather than compatibility, tolerance and adjustment only runs the family life. So it raises a question do such ideal couple exists anywhere?

The scriptures tell that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is a repository of infinite perfections and He is the perfect father, perfect friend etc. But is He a role model in being a perfect husband also? And if so, does He have a perfect life partner? The Vishnu purana tells us that the Lord's pleasure potency is His eternal consort and wife. She is the perfect spouse of the Lord matching with Him in every possible way. And when the Lord incarnates She also appears with Him in this world and both of them set an example of ideal husband-wife relation.

evaṁ yathā jagat-svāmī deva-devo janārdanaḥ
avatāraṁ karoty eva tathā śrīs tat-sahāyinī

Just as Lord Janardana, the controller of the universe and master of the demigods incarnates in different forms, so also does His eternal consort, Srimati Lakshmi-devi.

It also lists the important incarnations where the Lord appeared with Mother Lakshmi.

punaś ca padmā saṃbhūtā ādityo 'bhūd yadā hariḥ
yadā tu bhārgavo rāmas tadābhūd dharaṇī tv
iyamrāghavatve 'bhavat sītā rukmiṇī kṛṣṇajanmani
anyeṣu cāvatāreṣu viṣṇor eṣā sahāyinī

When Lord Hari appeared as Vamana, the son of Aditi, Lakshmi-devi appeared as Padma, and when the Lord appeared as Parashurama, she appeared as Dharini. When the Lord appeared as Ramacandra, she became Sita-devi, and when He descended in His original form as Lord Krishna, she was Princess Rukmini. In Lord Vishnu's many other incarnations, she always appeared as the Lord's consort.

In incarnations like Vamana, Parasurama, Narasimha, though Mother Lakshmi incarnated with the Lord, Her relation with the Lord and lessons for us from Their relation is mentioned only briefly in the scriptures. Only the incarnation of Krishna, Rama explains in detail, the relation between the Lord and His consort when the Lord exhibited ideal householder behaviour on this planet as human being. Out of these two, the incarnation of Lord Rama sets the ideal example of husband wife relation applicable to everyone since the Lord exhibited the vow of having only one wife 'eka patni vrata'. Also the teachings taught by this divine couple is documented in detail in the Ramayana, Srimad Bhagavatam and other scriptures. Let us meditate more on this glorious example and teachings from the divine couple Lord Rama and Mother Sita and understand how They are really 'made for each other'.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Narahari Krishna das
