Made For Each Other - Part 2

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled "Made for Each Other", wherein we were meditating on the Divine Couple Lord Rama and Mother Sita. Let us proceed further.

The great acharya Sri Ramanuja states in his Saranagati Gadyam the nature of Mother Lakshmi whose is a perfect match for the Lord in every way as follows:

bhagavān nārāyaṇa abhimata anurūpa svarūpa
rūpa guna vibhava aiśvarya śīladi anavādhika
asaṅkhyeya kalyāna guna ganām

The above sloka states that Mother Lakshmi is perfect match for the Lord in terms of her form, qualities, essential nature, greatness and behaviour and her thinking is completely in tune with the Lord always. The matching between husband and wife can be categorized into three broad headings.

1) Physical compatibility between husband and wife is called anurūpa dāmpatyam.
2) Compatibility in terms of qualities and essential nature is called anuguna dāmpatyam
3) Compatibility in terms of behaviour and oneness of thinking is abhimata dāmpatyam.

In this world, it is difficult to find couples who match in all the three ways. People in general give so much importance for physical compatibility alone, instead of looking for qualities, behaviour etc. Many times even if they match in terms of physical features, there is no like-mindedness. I personally saw this in one of my friend's life wherein the couple had matching features, but got divorced and the battle in the court was very nasty. Here anurūpa dāmpatyam is there but there is no anuguna or abhimata dāmpatyam. There are many couples who are perfect match in qualities and thinking but the physical matching may not be there. But such couples are able to pull on family life better than the ones who have matching physical features, but less like-mindedness.

However in the case of the Lord and His consort, both these matching are present to the complete extent and it was very well demonstrated during the incarnation of Lord Rama. This is well brought out by the following sloka from Srimad Bhagavatam while describing the marriage of Lord Rama and Mother Sita.

jitvānurūpa-guṇa-śīla-vayo ’ṅga-rūpāṁ
sītābhidhāṁ śriyam urasy abhilabdhamānām

Thus the Lord achieved the hand of mother Sita, who was equally as endowed with transcendental qualities of form, beauty, behavior, age and nature. Indeed, she was the goddess of fortune who constantly rests on the chest of the Lord.

The matching of the Lord's beauty with His consort (anuroopa dampatyam) attracts even the mind of the great Parasara rishi who explains it as follows in Vishnupurana 1,9.142:

devatve devadeheyaṃ manuṣyatve ca mānuṣī
viṣṇor dehānurūpāṃ vai karoty eṣātmanas tanum

Lakshmi-devi appears in different forms, corresponding to the forms of Lord Vishnu. When the Lord appears as a demigod, she assumes a demigod-like form, and when He appears in a human-like form, she assumes a human-like form also. As the Lord's transcendental potency, she is not different form Him, and her spiritual forms are all perfect and complete. This is the opinion of the learned transcendentalists.

Let us meditate more on this perfect match in terms of form (anurūpa dāmpatyam) of this divine couple in the following offerings, Lord Rama willing.

Hare Krishna.
Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Narahari Krishna das
