Ante Narayana Smrti - Part 15

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Ante Nārāyaṇa Smrti", wherein we saw Sukadeva Goswami narrating the story of the brahmana Ajamila. In the previous offerings we saw the Yamadutas explaining the process they follow for determining whether a person is fit for punishment or not. Now let us hear further.

Yamaraja has told Yamadutas that all living entities who act whimsically under the influence of modes of material nature and against scriptural injunctions are all candidates eligible for punishment. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 6.1.52 the Yamadutas say to Vishnudutas,

dehy ajño ’jita-ṣaḍ-vargo necchan karmāṇi kāryate
kośakāra ivātmānaṁ karmaṇācchādya muhyati

The foolish embodied living entity, inept at controlling his senses and mind, is forced to act according to the influence of the modes of material nature, against his desires. He is like a silkworm that uses its own saliva to create a cocoon and then becomes trapped in it, with no possibility of getting out. The living entity traps himself in a network of his own fruitive activities and then can find no way to release himself. Thus he is always bewildered, and repeatedly he dies.

Srila Prabhupada in his wonderful purport to above verse says, "The influence of the modes of nature is very strong. The living entity entangled in different types of fruitive activity is like a silkworm trapped in a cocoon. Getting free is very difficult unless he is helped by the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

If Yamadutas had told this verse now, apart from silkworm example they would have given the example of how living entities are entangled and trapped in the network of world-wide web. Internet and its associated paraphernalias like facebook, Whatsapp, Selfies etc have trapped people to such an extent that people of all ages, young and old and all walks of life, are becoming so addicted to it, that they spend hours and hours browsing in the web, caring very little even for their family, what to speak of their soul. In spite of so many health awareness news being circulated about the evil effects of browsing for hours, how it affects the mental condition etc, people are lying trapped in these webs and wasting valuable human life. Social media has become a place where people are encouraged to show-off their talents, so called greatness and love for family members etc. But it has resulted only in people losing the qualities of genuine humility, love and care etc. Recently we heard about how a man foolishly tried to take selfie with a dangerous cobra, only to be bitten by it and later spend lakhs of rupees to save his life. Day in and day out, we also hear so many news of accidents caused because of people carelessly driving/crossing roads, while they are still being trapped in the network of mobile and web.

On our own it is very difficult to get out of this network of world-wide web as well as fruitive activities. So just like how the child in the womb prays in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 3.31.15, "The human soul further prays: The living entity is put under the influence of material nature and continues a hard struggle for existence on the path of repeated birth and death. This conditional life is due to his forgetfulness of his relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, without the Lord's mercy, how can he again engage in the transcendental loving service of the Lord?", let us also pray to the all powerful Supreme Lord, to free us from these shackles and focus on devotional service.

Krishna willing we shall continue to learn further lessons from the pastime of Ajamila through the pages of Srimad Bhagavatam in the subsequent offerings.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
