Getting Rid of False Ego

Dear Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

We all know that Lord Krishna had taken various roles like Chariot driver, Watchman, Messenger and so on to favor His loving devotees. It is naturally bewildering to us that how can Lord, who is the proprietor of everything, play such menial roles. Our concept is always on a bodily platform and we always think that a higher class person should do the high class work and a low class person should do the menial services. Hence this act of Lord Krishna is unfathomable to our minds. We can get some nice insight into this point from a beautiful verse spoken by Bhishmadev to Yudhisthira Maharaj when all great personalities had gathered to observe his passing away from this world. Sri Bhishmadev says (SB 1.9.21),

sarvātmanaḥ sama-dṛśo hy advayasyānahaṅkṛteḥ
tat-kṛtaṁ mati-vaiṣamyaṁ niravadyasya na kvacit

Being the Absolute Personality of Godhead, He is present in everyone's heart. He is equally kind to everyone, and He is free from the false ego of differentiation. Therefore whatever He does is free from material inebriety. He is equibalanced.

In the purport Srila Prabhupada makes the following beautiful statements:

"He [Lord Krishna] is Paramatma, or the Supersoul, present in everyone as the supreme guidance, and therefore He is already the chariot driver and counsel of all living beings. When He, therefore, exhibits Himself as chariot driver of Arjuna, there is no change in His exalted position. It is the power of devotional service only that demonstrates Him as the chariot driver or the messenger. Since He has nothing to do with the material conception of life because He is absolute spiritual identity, there is for Him no superior or inferior action. Being the Absolute Personality of Godhead, He has no false ego, and so He does not identify Himself with anything different from Him. The material conception of ego is equibalanced in Him. He does not feel, therefore, inferior by becoming the chariot driver of His pure devotee."

Two qualities of Krishna mentioned in the above verse are worth noting and this gives the reason as to how Krishna was able to perform all kinds of activities without any reservation.

1. anahankrteh - free from all material identity of false ego.
2. niravadyasya - freed from all attachment.

If we actually see, lack of these two qualities is the reason for our gross bodily conception. In course of time as we grow from boyhood to youth and so on, we acquire some qualifications, degrees, jobs, positions, status etc and we start identifying ourselves with these external things. Instead of identifying ourselves with the soul, we identify with these bodily designations. We not only identify with it, we also get attached to it. Therefore, I may be working as a Managing Director, Senior Engineer etc in a company. But gradually we get attached to these positions. Later when somebody gives us a work that is meant for a clerk or a mid-level staff, then we immediately reject it saying that my position is so and so and I cannot do the work of a lower level staff. We even feel insulted that people do not recognize our exalted designation. Whether we are low level or high level, all these designations are very momentary and flickering. Today one may be a great person, but the time factor is so powerful that it will make him a pauper in no time. A very powerful verse spoken by Mucukunda unto the Lord, throws light on this point beautifully (SB 10.51.50):

purā rathair hema-pariṣkṛtaiś caran
mataṁ-gajair vā nara-deva-saṁjñitaḥ
sa eva kālena duratyayena te
kalevaro viṭ-kṛmi-bhasma-saṁjñitaḥ

The body that at first rides high on fierce elephants or chariots adorned with gold and is known by the name "king" is later, by Your invincible power of time, called "feces," "worms," or "ashes."

The same body which we are celebrating with so many hi-fi designations, will become stool, worms or ashes in no time. If we realize this factually, then we can get rid of the false ego and establish ourselves in the true ego that "We are spirit souls and an eternal servant of the Supreme Lord." At that time we will not differentiate between the categories of services. Spiritual world is Absolute. Therefore whatever one person achieves by sincerely studying the scriptures, the same thing a person can achieve by sincerely sweeping the floor. The key is sincere love towards Krishna.

Let us pray to the Supreme Lord to bless us with an equanimous vision and help us in practicing our devotional service without attachment or identification with the false allurements of this world.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Kalacakra Krsna das
