Achieving the Mercy of the Lord

Dear Devotees,
Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble pranams! All Glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This month being the most auspicious Damodhar month wherein the Lord as Lord Damodar exhibiting His super excellent quality of being subordinate to His devotee by accepting to be bound by Yashoda mayi . This super excellent quality is called bhrtya vaśyatā - His transcendental quality of becoming subordinate to His servitor or devotees. Also not only He gave the position of Mother to Yashoda mayi but also the terrible demon Putana also. The Lord accepts the least qualification of a living entity and awards him the highest reward. That is the standard of His character.

Srimad Bhagavatam states the extreme mercy awarded to Yashoda Matha very nicely in the verse 10.9.20

nemaṁ viriñco na bhavo na śrīr apy aṅga-saṁśrayā
prasādaṁ lebhire gopī yat tat prāpa vimuktidāt

Neither Lord Brahma, nor Lord Siva, nor even the goddess of fortune, who is always the better half of the Supreme Lord, can obtain from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the deliverer from this material world, such mercy as received by mother Yashoda.

In this verse the word "lebhire" is very important to meditate upon. Srila Prabhupada writes in the word-word equivalent - "lebhire" means "Obtained". In other words 'have been granted to one'. Yashoda matha is granted the mercy without her asking for it because she deserves due to her unflinching loving devotion to the Lord. Whereas in case of Putana she did the service of being a mother by feeding the Lord with milk coated with poison to kill Him. Therefore Prabhupada in his SB 3.2.23 word-word equivalent writes the word lebhire "achieved" meaning "accomplishment". But she also achieved the position of mother in the spiritual world just because of her service even though it is motivated to kill the Lord. The Lord saw her service and not her intention.

In the same way we have achieved by the causeless mercy of the Lord and Gurudev the path of devotional service to the Supreme Lord even though our motives are not proper (worse than Putana). We can see ourselves that even though we are performing little service (that too with the motive for name and fame), yet our service is being recognized by overlooking our intentions. On the other hand, in the material world we may do so many services, but if there is one mistake in our service, we will be blamed for that mistake always. Whatever we did good is not recognized in the material world because everyone wants to find fault with others in order to cover their faults. This kali yuga is full of faults and everywhere and anywhere it is faulty. But Srimad Bhagavatam says that even though we may perform immature devotional service (bhajan apakvo) and fall down also we are not becoming failures. This is because of transcendental nature of devotional service (which can be never be wiped off from our account). In the material world for example, a pilot who has been flying for so many years of experience, if he makes one simple mistake in managing the flight he will end up in total failure of his life, experience and knowledge. Therefore who will not be attracted to be engaged in devotional service which is so sublime and transcendental?

I therefore pray to the Supreme Lord Damodara, Yashodamayi, Srila Prabhupada and Gurudev to bestow their causeless mercy on this poor soul to get attracted to this imperishable path of devotional service ALWAYS.

Thank you very much.
Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
