Offering Respect

Sudarshana devi dasi

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

In Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 5, chapter 5 - Lord Rshabadev's Teachings, we find that in every shloka the Lord has wonderfully explained the qualities to be possessed by His devotee. This is very much similar to "Bhakti-Yoga" - 12th chapter in Bhagavad Gita. Lord Rshabadev being non-different from Lord Krishna was very well aware of our forgetful nature. So He has repeatedly given these wonderful instructions in so many ways so that it enters dull headed people like me at least once.

In verse 26 Lord says,

sarvāṇi mad-dhiṣṇyatayā bhavadbhiś carāṇi bhūtāni sutā dhruvāṇi
sambhāvitavyāni pade pade vo vivikta-dṛgbhis tad u hārhaṇaṁ me

My dear sons, you should not envy any living entity -be he moving or nonmoving. Knowing that I am situated in them, you should offer respect to all of them at every moment. In this way, you offer respect to Me.

We must neither disturb others nor should we be disturbed by others. But is this possible practically? Honestly speaking, when I face such situations, I feel depressed and angry and fail to see the hand of Lord in them. There is a old saying -"Do good unto those who do bad to you". - But what to speak of doing good, I don't even feel like offering respects to them. Here the Lord reiterates that we should offer respect to all living entities as He is residing as Super-soul within. The words "pade pade" is very significant. It is not that we should respect when they are favourable to others and disrespect them under infavourable situations. The Supreme Lord is present in them all the time. So we must respect them as respecting them is as good as offering respect to the Lord directly. The very goal of this life is to please the Supreme and by disrespecting others we only land up in disrespecting as well as displeasing the Supreme Lord.

Merely reading about these qualities alone is of no use.  I pray at the lotus feet of Lord Rshabadev and Gurudev that I remember to see the Lord in every living entity all the time and give up my bad quality of disrespecting others.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
