How to perfect our senses?

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

A man who is in perfect knowledge knows that one cannot be happier than he is destined to be. In this material world, everyone is destined to suffer a certain amount of distress and to enjoy a certain amount of happiness. The amount of happiness and distress is already predestined for every living entity. No one can increase or decrease the happiness of the materialistic way of life. Therefore we must use our time for advancement of Krishna consciousness by engaging our senses.

In 10th canto 80th chapter of Srimad Bhagavatam Parikshit Maharaj, very nicely explains the best ways to perfect our senses.

1)The capacity for talking can be perfected only by describing the transcendental qualities of the Lord.
2)The capacity for working with one's hands can be successful only when one engages in serving the Lord with those hands.
3)Ears can be perfected simply by engagement in hearing the transcendental activities of the Lord.
4)The function of the head can be fully utilized when the head is engaged in bowing down before the Lord and His representative
5)The function of mouth is perfected by drinking the caranamrta.
6)Similarly, one's mind can be pacified only when he simply thinks of Krishna, in full Krishna consciousness.

This does not mean that one has to be very thoughtful, but one simply has to understand that Krishna, the Absolute Truth, is all-pervasive by His localized aspect as Paramatma. If only one can think that Krishna, as Paramatma, is everywhere, even within the atom, then one can perfect the thinking, feeling and willing function of his mind." In Bhagavad Gita verse 2.59, Lord Krishna says

viṣayā vinivartante nirāhārasya dehinaḥ
rasa-varjaṁ raso ’py asya paraṁ dṛṣṭvā nivartate

The embodied soul may be restricted from sense enjoyment, though the taste for sense object remains. But ceasing such engagements by experiencing a higher taste, he is fixed in consciousness.

Srila Prabhupada describes in his purport that sense restriction from sense enjoyment by rules and regulations is something like restricting a diseased person from certain types of eatables. The patient however neither likes such restriction nor loses his taste for eatables. Similarly sense restriction by some spiritual process like Astanga yoga in the matter of yama, niyama, āsana, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra, dhāraṇā, dhyana & Samadhi is recommended for less intelligent persons who have no better knowledge, But one who is Krishna conscious, he automatically loses his taste for pale things.

Unless one is a perfect devotee, he cannot achieve the highest standard of knowledge. It is stated in the Bhagavad-gita that a person who has come to the point of perfection of knowledge surrenders unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In other words, any person who has surrendered his life for the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead has come to the point of perfect knowledge.

Our Gurudev HH Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj is the perfect example. Recently HG Kalacakra prabhu wrote how Maharaj is chanting for us, always thinking for our welfare, and has mercifully taken the responsibility to take all of us to Bhagavat Dham. But I am so cunning and lazy that I am not realizing this and finding it difficult to write even one mail to Granthraj every month.

I pray at the lotus feet of Gurudev to kindly forgive and give me the strength to send Granthraj mails regularly and thus keep my senses engaged in the service of the Lord.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
