Padam Padam Yad Vipadam

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev.

Everyone in the material world is engaged in a struggle for existence. Everyone tries to save himself from danger, but when one is unable to save himself, he then takes shelter of the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and by the mercy of Krsna we get out of danger many times still we have no realization and we don't want to change our attitude and tuned not to listen anybody. When we come out of danger we say, "Thank you God" and forget and after some time again we repeat the same mistake. This cheating propensity is deeply routed in our heart because we have no love for Krsna. When Krsna sees that we are out of control then he doesn't provide us shelter. In this connection there is a story.

Once a king while hunting got stuck in jungle and he forgot the route to come out of jungle. He began searching for the way out and during this time he met one sadhu. The King asked him how to get out of the jungle then sadhu said, "I can't explain to you but I have one horse and it is fully trained. Once you say 'Thank you' he will start running and when you want to stop say 'Save God'. Immediately upon hearing this, the King sat on the horse and said Thank you. The horse started running at a speed of wind and within no time he came out of jungle. The King was very happy and he forgot how to stop the horse again he said Thank you further horse took speed and reached to the top of the hill. From there the king could see his death and he shouted Save God. Immediately the horse stopped and the moment horse stopped King said Thank you and ended his life with the horse. In our real life also we get many opportunities to correct ourself but we are not realizing that great danger is waiting for us. SB 8.2.32 Gajendra moksha teaches us how to get out of clutches of illusion.

na mām ime jñātaya āturaṁ gajāḥ
kutaḥ kariṇyaḥ prabhavanti mocitum
grāheṇa pāśena vidhātur āvṛto
’py ahaṁ ca taṁ yāmi paraṁ parāyaṇam

The other elephants, who are my friends and relatives, could not rescue me from this danger. What then to speak of my wives? They cannot do anything. It is by the will of providence that I have been attacked by this crocodile, and therefore I shall seek shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is always the shelter of everyone, even of great personalities.

Srila Prabhupada explains that in the material world at every step there is danger "padaṁ padaṁ yad vipadāṁ". A fool wrongly thinks that he is happy in this material world, but in fact he is not, for one who thinks that way is only illusion. At every step, at every moment, there is danger. In modern civilization one thinks that if he has a nice home and a nice car his life is perfect. In the Western countries, especially in America, it is very nice to possess a good car, but as soon as one is on the road, there is danger because at any moment an accident may take place and one will be killed. The record actually shows that so many people die in such accidents. Therefore if we actually think that this material world is a very happy place, this is our ignorance. Real knowledge is that this material world is full of danger. We may struggle for existence as far as our intelligence allows and may try to take care of ourselves, but unless the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, ultimately saves us from danger, our attempts will be useless. Therefore Prahlada Maharaja says in SB 7.9.19 We may invent so many ways to be happy or to counteract the dangers of this material world, but unless our attempts are sanctioned by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, they will never make us happy. Those who try to be happy without taking shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are mudhas, rascals. na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ [Bg. 7.15]. Those who are the lowest of men refuse to take to Krsna consciousness because they think that they will be able to protect themselves without Krsna's care. This is their mistake. The decision of the King of the elephants, Gajendra, was correct. In such a dangerous position, he sought shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

We sincerely pray at the Lotus feet of Guru Maharaj, Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krsna to bestow Their mercy upon us so that we can realize the danger in front of us just like Gajendra did and act swiftly to take shelter of the Lord without waiting for the danger to come in front of us.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev,
Tusta Krsna das & Suniti devi dasi
