Use Your BMW Before You Lose It

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 6.11.24 Vrttrasura offers the below wonderful prayer

ahaṁ hare tava pādaika-mūla-
dāsānudāso bhavitāsmi bhūyaḥ
manaḥ smaretāsu-pater guṇāṁs te
gṛṇīta vāk karma karotu kāyaḥ

O my Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, will I again be; able to be a servant of Your eternal servants who find shelter only at Your lotus feet? O Lord of my life, may I again become their servant so that my mind may always think of Your transcendental attributes, my words always glorify those attributes, and my body always engage in the loving service of Your Lordship?

In his purport to the above verse, Srila Prabhupada mentions that "This verse gives the sum and substance of devotional life."  The word "dāsānudāso" in the above verse is worth meditating because that is the secret for progress in bhakti. But in this material world we want to become "BossanuBoss" and so we always dive deep and keep drowning in the whirlpool of miseries.  The way to improve our behaviour and keep ourselves fixed in bhakti is very nicely mentioned in the above verse. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.2.18, Suta Goswami also says

naṣṭa-prāyeṣv abhadreṣu nityaṁ bhāgavata-sevayā
bhagavaty uttama-śloke bhaktir bhavati naiṣṭhikī

By regular attendance in classes on the Bhagavatam and by rendering of service to the pure devotee, all that is troublesome to the heart is almost completely destroyed, and loving service unto the Personality of Godhead, who is praised with transcendental songs, is established as an irrevocable fact.

So service and study goes hand in hand. Here we should note that Suta Goswami has told Bhagavatam study "and" service to pure devotees. He has not mentioned "or". So we should have eagerness to serve as well as to study. This will alone help us to progress in bhakti. By associating with good people we become good. By associating with bad people we will become bad.  So we should be eager to associate with pure devotees of the Lord and try to serve them.

What happens when we serve such pure devotees is very nicely explained in the above verse SB-6.11.24. In this world many of us might dream to possess a BMW. Indeed our dear Lord Krishna has blessed all of us with BMWs. The BMW referred here is not the ordinary vehicle created by man with imperfect senses. Here BMW refers to our body mind and words. By sincerely serving the pure devotees of the Lord, by their mercy, we would be blessed with ability to use our BMW effectively in Lord's service. If we use this BMW in Krishna's service under the guidance of spiritual master then our lives are successful. Recently I heard a proverb - "Use it before you lose it". So be it the BMW car or this BMW - our body, mind and words, we would definitely lose them if we don't use them in Krishna's service now.

Although in the previous birth Narada Muni was son of a poor maid servant, simply by serving the sages, Lord had exalted him to the position of Narada Muni, one among the 12 Mahajans in his next birth. So serving the pure devotees helps us to make significant progress in bhakti.  Maharaj used his BMW completely in the service of Srila Prabhupada and Sri Krishna and so he was in perfect consciousness till the end.  He has given us this nice shloka in one of his classes on Purushottama month. Maharaj has insisted that we should recite this shloka every day, as soon as we get up in the morning and before going to sleep at night. This is a very simple and potent prayer, clearly explaining us how we should behave and what we should pray to the Lord.

nānyam vadāmi na śṛṇomi na cintayāmi
nānyam smarāmi na bhajāmi na ca āśrayāmi
kṛṣṇa tvadīya caraṇāmbujam antareṇa
śrī śrīnivāsa puruṣottama dehi dāsyam

I will not speak anything else. I will not hear anything else. I wil not think anything else. I will not remember anything else. I will not worship anything else. I will not take any other shelter. Krishna Your lotus feet are inside my heart. Shri Srinivaasa, Purushottama, please engage me in Your devotional service.

I pray that I use my BMW in this life time itself, as per the above verse and always remember my eternal constitutional position as servant of servant of Supreme Lord Krishna.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
