Spontaneous Devotional Service

Hare Krishna,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada, Srila Gurudev and the devotees at Grantharaj conference.

In Srimad Bhagavatam 3rd Canto Sri Maitreya muni speaks to Viduraji about the creation and the pastimes of Lord Brahma's meeting and conversation with the Supreme Lord. Lord Brahma requests the Lord to reveal to him how he can undertake the overwhelming task of creation without becoming falsely proud. The influence of pride and struggle with the tendency to become falsely proud of achievements is equal to forgetfulness of the Lord. Without acknowledging the Lord we take responsibility for our actions and are bound by the results both success and failure. This leads to the tendency to take credit for our achievements and blame others, fate, or God for failures The process of Devotional service is dedicated to remembering the Lord. śravana, kirtana Visnu smarana. "In answer to the above prayer, the Lord said that he/ Lord Brahma (& ourselves) should not think of existing without a relationship with His omnipotency." (SB 3.9.32 Purport). In the following verse SB 3.9.33, the Supreme Lord gives further help to Lord Brahma:

yadā rahitam ātmānaṁ bhūtendriya-guṇāśayaiḥ
svarūpeṇa mayopetaṁ paśyan svārājyam ṛcchati

When you are free from the conception of gross and subtle bodies and when your senses are free from all influences of the modes of material nature, you will realize your pure form in My association. At that time you will be situated in pure consciousness.

In the purport, Srila Prabhupada explains: "Whereas the jñānīs remain pacified on the platform of simple understanding, the devotees develop further spiritual advancement in loving service. The devotees develop a spiritual individuality in their spontaneous service attitude, which is enhanced on and on, up to the point of mādhurya-rasa, or transcendental loving service reciprocated between the lover and the beloved."

At the start of the purport, Srila Prabhupada states "In the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu it is said that a person whose only desire is to render transcendental loving service to the Lord is a free person in any condition of material existence."

As often quoted, "Krishna consciousness is not an imposition but an uncovering process"

More from purport: "Transcendental loving service is never to be compared to the forced service of the material world." How is this? "The Lord is svarāṭ, or fully independent, and the servant is also fully independent, or svarāṭ, in the spiritual atmosphere because there is no forced service. There the transcendental loving service is due to spontaneous love."

Granthraj Srimad Bhagavatam Ki Jai!

Your humble servant,
Madana Gopal das
