Do Not Waste Krishna's Money

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

Being a material father, we love our children and family and like to continuously serve them, fulfil their demands, look after their needs and try to satisfy them in all respects. It is generally said that those who are earning money by hard work, will not be spend-thrifts. We have experience that our children do not realize how difficult it is to earn money and so they spend money freely. They always demand more and more and are never satisfied. In this context there is story. A son was demanding pocket expense from his father. His father said that you don't realize how difficult it is to earn money. To make him realize the value of hard work, the father asked his son can to earn at least one rupee per day. The son immediately said, "OK. Tomorrow I will earn and show you when you return home." Next day morning when the son was getting ready to go out to earn money, his mother stopped him and said - "You take this one rupee and show it to your father." When his father returned from work, he showed the money to his father and then his father asked him to go and put it in to fire. Immediately the son put the rupee in the fire. Then the father asked him to earn one rupee again. This went on for few days. Every day his mother gave him one rupee and son used to show it to his father. Finally, one day, mother said - "Today I don't have money to give you." Then the son went out in search of job and after great difficulty he could earn one rupee. As usual when his father asked him to put the rupee in the fire, son immediately replied - "No I can't put this rupee into fire." Then father said - "Yes. Today you have earned one rupee."

Maharaj gives us the example of the sons of Kubera - Nalakuvara and Manigriva. As we know, rich man's son gets easy money and as soon as the riches are there and they see that they are going to inherit the father's property then three things follow.

1. strī - illicit connection with women
2. dyūtam - gambling
3. āsavaḥ - intoxication

These three things are there without fail, when easy money is there. In Bhagavad Gita verse 16.16 Lord Krishna explains the nature of such demoniac people.

aneka-citta-vibhrāntā moha-jāla-samāvṛtāḥ
prasaktāḥ kāma-bhogeṣu patanti narake ’śucau

Thus perplexed by various anxieties and bound by a network of illusions, they become too strongly attached to sense enjoyment and fall down into hell.

It is important that children understand the value of money. Money is "Lakshmi" and she has to be used properly in Krishna's service. Misuse of Lakshmi will lead us only to hell. Somehow or the other we should instil this lesson in the minds of our children. Unfortunately, we are living in Kali-yuga of computers - where in at a very beginning stage of their career itself they are getting surplus amount of salary. We are practically seeing how this IT revolution has encouraged so many youths towards pubs where in illicit sex, wine and gambling are easily available for them. At least 30 years ago, we could bravely say that Indian women don't smoke. But now it is not the case. Irregular work timings (night-shifts) etc are provoking the youth (both men and women) to get into bad habits like smoking etc. The younger generation fail to realise that all these bad habits will definitely affect their health and they have to face the consequence in the form of Cancer, AIDS etc. After all if they misuse Lakshmi now - they will have to shell out all they earn to the doctors - not when they are in their 50s...but much earlier even when they are in their 20s and 30s itself.

In verse 16.20 Lord Krishna says -

āsurīṁ yonim āpannā mūḍhā janmani janmani
mām aprāpyaiva kaunteya tato yānty adhamāṁ gatim

Attaining repeated birth amongst the species of demoniac life, O son of Kunti, such persons can never approach Me. Gradually they sink down to the most abominable type of existence.

Understanding the gravity of Krishna's words and as responsible parents, we should ensure that we use Lakshmi properly in Krishna's service and also teach our children also by our personal example.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Tushta Krishna das and Suniti devi dasi
