Consistency in Service

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

Consistency is a very important factor which we need to abide to while serving the Lord. Irrespective of how much ever small is our service we need to do it regularly. Lord is very much pleased by this behaviour. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.3.38 Suta Goswami says,

sa veda dhātuḥ padavīṁ parasya
duranta-vīryasya rathāṅga-pāṇeḥ
yo ’māyayā santatayānuvṛttyā
bhajeta tat-pāda-saroja-gandham

Only those who render unreserved, uninterrupted, favorable service unto the lotus feet of Lord Krishna, who carries the wheel of the chariot in His hand, can know the creator of the universe in His full glory, power and transcendence.

The devotional service unto Lord should be,

amāyayā — without reservation;
santatayā — without any gap;
anuvṛttyā — favorably

As He is Rathāṅga-pāṇeḥ - the Supreme Lord who took the wheel of chariot in His hands - in spite of taking a vow that He will never lift any weapon in the battle of Kurukshetra. The Lord is Supreme Truth - But just to protect His devotee Arjuna and to simultaneously fulfil the desire of His dear devotee Bhishmadev to see Him in an chivalrous mood - He did not mind to break His own promise. He never has any reservations in protecting His devotees - Irrespective of their material positions or situations, the Lord always protects them. But unfortunately, we have so many reservations in serving Him.  We think that we can serve Him only under certain conditions - when our health permits, when we have sufficient wealth, suitable family circumstances etc. If our service is motivated by these factors then it will take a very long time to see the Lord. Service unto Krishna should be done under all circumstances. As we saw in the recent mails written by HG Narahari Krishna das Prabhu and HG Tushta Krishna das Prabhu, the Lord is pleased only by the mood with we try to service Him.

Srila Prabhupada in his wonderful purport to verse 6.16.34 says - "Pure devotees are described as sama-mati, which means that they never deviate from devotional service under any circumstances. It is not that devotees worship the Supreme Lord only when happy; they worship Him even when in distress. Happiness and distress do not hamper the process of devotional service. Therefore Srimad-Bhagavatam says that devotional service is ahaituky apratihatā, unmotivated and uninterrupted. When a devotee offers devotional service to the Lord without any motive (anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam [Bhakti-rasaamrta-sindhu 1.1.11], his service cannot be hampered by any material condition (apratihatā). Thus, a devotee who offers service in all conditions of life can conquer the Supreme Personality of Godhead... Because they are pure, being free from all material desires, they fully surrender to the Supreme Lord, and therefore the Lord conquers them. Such devotees never aspire for liberation. They simply desire to serve the lotus feet of the Lord. Because they serve the Lord without desires for remuneration, they can conquer the mercy of the Lord. The Lord is by nature very merciful, and when He sees that His servant is working without desires for material profit, naturally He is conqueredDevotees are always engaged in service.

sa vai manaḥ kṛṣṇa-padāravindayor
vacāṁsi vaikuṇṭha-guṇānuvarṇane

All the activities of their senses are engaged in the service of the Lord. Because of such devotion, the Lord gives Himself to His devotees as if they could use Him for any purpose they might desire. Of course, devotees have no purpose other than to serve. When a devotee fully surrenders and has no aspiration for material profit, the Lord certainly gives him all opportunities for service. This is the position of the Lord when conquered by His devotees."

His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada himself is the best example for the above qualities. Even though he was in his 70s, with hardly little or no support from friends and family, without any financial backup he set out to travel in ship to a unknown country without a single clue of what the future was in store for him. He was not shaken even when he had suffered two heart-attacks during his voyage to United State. His simple goal was to serve his guru and Krishna and he was 100% surrendered to them. As soon as he got a heart attack, he didn't think that, "this is too much for me - let me go back to Vrindavan and rest" But he was always favourably serving the Lord without any reservation and was completely dependent on Him. Bhakta-vatsala Krishna, moved by his anyābhilāṣa ahaitukī seva - made the establishment of the International Society of Krishna Conscious movement, 108 temples, volumes of translation of scriptures, book distribution, prasadam distribution, revolution in lives of so many suffering souls and many more things possible through him.

So the next time when our tricky mind gives us excuses to skip our sadhana, let us hammer the thoughts of such great souls like Srila Prabhupada and Gurudeva - who has shown that neither age, nor health, nor lack of support from people around can stop us from serving the Lord. All that is required is just simple surrender unto guru and Krishna. Our prayers unto the lotus feet of Gurudev, Srila Prabhupada and Krishna to bless us - so that we serve Them consistently, without motives under all circumstances.

Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
