Narada Muni - Father of Devotional Service Part - 5

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Narada Muni - The Father of Devotional Service". In the previous offering, we had seen Narada Muni's transcendental instruction to Vyasadeva on Srimad Bhagavatam. Today, we will see instructions of Narada Muni to Dhruva Maharaj while meeting him in the forest. Dhruva as a young boy of 5 years old, was determined to see Supreme Lord for fulfillment of his objective.

5. Dissatisfaction leads to varieties of births: Narada Muni wonderfully says to Dhruva Maharaj that dissatisfaction is another feature of the illusory energy; every living entity is controlled by his previous actions, and therefore there are different varieties of life for enjoying or suffering. Srimad Bhagavatam verse 4.8.29 spoken by Devarshi Naradaji out of great compassion is yet very  educative and inspiring.

parituṣyet tatas tāta tāvan-mātreṇa pūruṣaḥ
daivopasāditaṁ yāvad vīkṣyeśvara-gatiṁ budhaḥ

The process of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is very wonderful. One who is intelligent should accept that process and be satisfied with whatever comes, favorable or unfavorable, by His supreme will.

Srila Prabhupada says in the purport that, "Everyone who is intelligent should know that because of our concept of bodily existence, we are subjected to suffering and enjoyment. One who is in the transcendental position, beyond the concept of bodily life, is considered to be intelligent. One who is a devotee especially accepts all reverses as gifts of the Supreme Lord. When a devotee is put into distress, he accepts this as God’s mercy and offers Him repeated obeisances with his body, mind and intellect. An intelligent person, therefore, should be always satisfied, depending on the mercy of the Lord."

We are very much disturbed when things are not falling in place, the way we expected. We fail to understand that it is Lord’s illusory energy that controls material world. We ask, "why me?" This means that we are not intelligent as Narada Muni says. Intelligent are  those who accepts whatever happens in their life as Krishna's will. Srimad Bhagavatam time and again says we should be satisfied somehow or the other - (santuṣṭyā yena kena ). We fail to understand that our life in the material world is not honeymoon time. Since we desired to enjoy independent of the Lord, we are reaping the results for the same, by being caught in the cycle of birth and death. This life is rectification period for our past sins. So instead of rebelling again, if we simply accept the miseries and stick to devotional service then, we will be able to cut short our stay in this material world, free ourselves from cycle of birth and death and go back to Krishna.

Let us pray to Narada Muni to be merciful to all of us, and bless us with intelligence. Krishna willing, we will learn more about Narada Muni's instructions in the next offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
