Narada Muni, Father of Devotional Service - Part 10

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Narada Muni - The Father of Devotional Service". Narada Muni explains constitutional position of Supreme Personality of Godhead and the living entity to King Prachinabarhi in Srimad Bhagavatam. Today, we will see Devarshi's further instruction to Prachinabarhi.

10. Devotional service leads to detachment and knowledge: Narada Muni speaks of ultimate remedy for the conditioned living entity in Srimad Bhagavatam 4.29.36-37,

athātmano ’rtha-bhūtasya yato ’nartha-paramparā
saṁsṛtis tad-vyavacchedo bhaktyā paramayā gurau

vāsudeve bhagavati bhakti-yogaḥ samāhitaḥ
sadhrīcīnena vairāgyaṁ jñānaṁ ca janayiṣyati

The real interest of the living entity is to get out of the nescience that causes him to endure repeated birth and death. The only remedy is to surrender unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead through His representative. Unless one renders devotional service unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vasudeva, one cannot possibly become completely detached from this material world, nor can he possibly manifest real knowledge.

Srila Prabhupada says one first has to control the mind so that the desires of the mind can be purified... Material existence is actually a chain of action and reaction brought about by different types of fruitive activities. This is the cause of birth and death. One can stop this process only by engaging oneself in the service of Vasudeva."

We should get frustrated of this useless life. There is nothing great in this material world that we can dream of achieving as everything is temporary over here. In today's world, most dear to us is our body and our intimate relationship with our family members. But this too are short-lived. Scripture says that we are wandering life after life on this material world in the different bodies completely illusioned. We need to stop this by awakening our consciousness. So, what are the requirements?  Narada Muni says in the above verse that detachment and knowledge are achieved only through the mercy of Supreme Lord. His mercy is possible only when we perform devotional service with complete surrender. Narada Muni beautfully gives complete solution in the next verse.

SB 4.29.38
so ’cirād eva rājarṣe syād acyuta-kathāśrayaḥ
śṛṇvataḥ śraddadhānasya nityadā syād adhīyataḥ

O best of kings, one who is faithful, who is always hearing the glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is always engaged in the culture of Krishna consciousness and in hearing of the Lord's activities, very soon becomes eligible to see the Supreme Personality of Godhead face to face.

What an excellent assurance from Devarsi. Undoubtedly, we are all fallen souls. It may take hundreds of lifetime to achieve the above. However, we can try to engage ourselves in the culture of Krsna consciousness in this lifetime. And the culture of Krishna consciousness is also nicely mentioned by Srila Prabhupada in his purport to verse 1.6.25 - The conclusion is that the Lord can be seen and heard by persistent chanting of the transcendental sound. Narada Muni, Tukkaram, Dhruva Maharaj are all great Bhagavatas who were all blessed to see the Lord face to face due to persistent chanting of the Names and glories of the Lord.

Krishna willing, we will learn more about Narada Muni’s instruction to King Prachinabarhi in the next offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Manohar Suvarna
