Narada Muni - Father of Devotional Service Part 11

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Narada Muni - The Father of Devotional Service". Narada Muni explains constitutional position of Supreme Personality of Godhead and the living entity to King Prachinabarhi in Srimad Bhagavatam. Today, we will see Devarshi's further instruction to Prachinabarhi.

11. Fearlessness and Qualification of Spiritual master: Narada Muni wonderfully instructs in Srimad Bhagavatam 4.29.51 about fearlessness and spiritual master.

sa vai priyatamaś cātmā yato na bhayam aṇv api
iti veda sa vai vidvān yo vidvān sa gurur hariḥ

One who is engaged in devotional service has not the least fear in material existence. This is because the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Supersoul and friend of everyone. One who knows this secret is actually educated, and one thus educated can become the spiritual master of the world. One who is an actually bona fide spiritual master, representative of Krishna, is not different from Krishna.

From the above, two important points are worth meditating.

(a) Fearlessness: This is one of the most important quality of a devotee. Devotees like Prahlad Maharaj and Ambarish Maharaj are illustrative examples in Srimad Bhagavatam for fearlessness. Despite facing threats to their own life, both Prahlad Maharaj and Ambarish Maharaj remained fearless. They did not even budge a little from their position, but silently kept meditating on the Lord. Hiranyakashipu says in Srimad Bhagavatam verses 7.5.46 and 47 "Although he is very near to me and is merely a child, he is situated in complete fearlessness  because he never forgets my misbehavior and his connection with his master, Lord Vishnu". He further says "I can see that this boy's strength is unlimited, for he has not feared any of my punishments. He appears immortal. Therefore, because of my enmity toward him, I shall die. Or maybe this will not take place".

(b) Qualification of Spiritual master: Sometimes we become fearful when we are alone. But in reality we are never alone for Lord is omnipresent, omniscient. One who knows this is actually educated. Acaryas like Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva know that Krishna is present as Super-soul and friend in every one's heart and so they are fearless and compassionate to all living entities. In his purport to Bhagavad Gita verses 16.1-3, Srila Prabhupada says, "For a sannyasi, the first qualification should be fearlessness. Because a sannyasi has to be alone without any support or guarantee of support, he has simply to depend on the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. If one thinks, "After I leave my connections, who will protect me?" he should not accept the renounced order of life. One must be fully convinced that Krishna or the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His localized aspect as Paramatma is always within, that He is seeing everything and He always knows what one intends to do. One must thus have firm conviction that Krishna as Paramatma will take care of a soul surrendered to Him. "I shall never be alone," one should think, "Even if I live in the darkest regions of a forest I shall be accompanied by Krishna, and He will give me all protection." That conviction is called abhayam, fearlessness. This state of mind is necessary for a person in the renounced order of life.

Krishna willing, we will learn more about the Narada Muni’s instruction to King Prachinabarhi in the next offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
