Narada Muni - Father of Devotional Service - Part 19

Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous offering titled, "Narada Muni - The Father of Devotional Service". In the previous offering, we have seen from the instruction of Devarshi Narada Muni that we can quickly satisfy Lord Janardana by showing mercy to all other living beings, being satisfied and by controlling the senses. Let us continue to hear further instructions from him.

20. Material desires blocks the path to Krishna: Narada Muni wonderfully glorifies supremely compassionate Lord Krishna in Srimad Bhagavatam 4.31.20,

apahata-sakalaiṣaṇāmalātmany
aviratam edhita-bhāvanopahūtaḥ
nija-jana-vaśa-gatvam ātmano ’yan
na sarati chidravad akṣaraḥ satāṁ hi

Being completely cleansed of all material desires, the devotees are freed from all mental contamination. Thus they can always think of the Lord constantly and address Him very feelingly. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, knowing Himself to be controlled by His devotees, does not leave them for a second, just as the sky overhead never becomes invisible.

Srila Prabhupada says that by always thinking of Krishna, the pure devotee's heart is freed from all kinds of desires. As soon as the Lord is seated within the heart of the devotee, the devotee cannot be contaminated by the material modes of nature. When the mind is completely free from material desire, the devotee can think of the Lord constantly. The Lord is invincible, yet He is conquered by His pure devotee. He enjoys being dependent on His devotee, just as Lord enjoyed being dependent on the mercy of mother Yashoda. Thinking Himself dependent on the devotee gives the Supreme Lord great enjoyment.

From the above verse, we understand that it is the material desire that keeps living entity away from Lord Krishna. So near yet so far. For example in case of Duryodhana, although Lord Krishna was right in front of him, he was never able to recognise the supremacy of Lord as he was consumed by material desires. Contamination of desire is so strong that we are forgetful of our supreme master, who is the doer. Once contamination is cleared, Krishna exhibits His magic. He helps us to understand Him and realise that everything belongs to Him and is controlled by Him. Hence, all human attempts for sense enjoyment and proprietorship are futile exercise. Eternal truth of the universe is only Krishna and nothing but Krishna. Therefore, devotees think of Krishna constantly and feelingly. Krishna does not leave devotees. Krishna says in Srimad Bhagavatam 9.4.68,

sādhavo hṛdayaṁ mahyaṁ sādhūnāṁ hṛdayaṁ tv aham
mad-anyat te na jānanti nāhaṁ tebhyo manāg api

The pure devotee is always within the core of My heart, and I am always in the heart of the pure devotee. My devotees do not know anything else but Me, and I do not know anyone else but them.

Krishna willing, we will learn more about the Narada Muni's instruction to Pracetas in the next offering.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
