Bathe in the Ganges of Krsna-Katha

Verse Number
SB 1.19.6

Gurudev: So today we are doing number six, chapter's name, The appearance of Sukadev Goswami and we are reading from first canto, chapter nineteen, verse number six.

Gurudev chants the invocation mantra very beautifully three times and devotees repeat: oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya

Gurudev chants the verse word by word very beautifully and devotees repeat:

yā vai lasac-chrī-tulasī-vimiśra-
punāti lokān ubhayatra seśān
kas tāṁ na seveta mariṣyamāṇaḥ

Gurudev reads the word to word and devotees repeat:

yā— the river which; vai— always; lasat— floating with; śrī-tulasī— tulasī leaves; vimiśra— mixed; kṛṣṇa-aṅghri — the lotus feet of the Lord, Śrī Kṛṣṇa; reṇu— dust; abhyadhika— auspicious; ambu— water; netrī— that which is carrying; punāti— sanctifies; lokān— planets; ubhayatra— both the upper and lower or inside and outside; sa-īśān— along with Lord Śiva; kaḥ— who else; tām— that river; na— does not; seveta— worship; mariṣyamāṇaḥ— one who is to die at any moment.

Gurudev: Translation by Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada ki

Devotees: Jai!!!

Gurudev: Please repeat.

Gurudev: The river [Ganges, by which the King sat to fast] carries the most auspicious water, which is mixed with the dust of the lotus feet of the Lord and tulasī leaves. Therefore that water sanctifies the three worlds inside and outside and even sanctifies Lord Śiva and other demigods. Consequently everyone who is destined to die must take shelter of this river.

Purport by Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada ki

Devotees: Jai!!!

Gurudev: Mahārāja Parīkṣit, just after receiving the news of his death within seven days, (Gurudev repeats) just after receiving the news of his death within seven days, (Gurudev continues) at once retired from family life and shifted himself to the sacred bank of the Yamunā River. Generally it is said that the King took shelter on the bank of the Ganges, but according to Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī, the King took shelter on the bank of the Yamunā. Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī's statement appears to be more appropriate because of the geographical situation. Mahārāja Parīkṣit resided in his capital Hastināpura, situated near present Delhi, and the River Yamunā flows down past the city. Naturally the King would take shelter of the River Yamunā because she was flowing past his palace door. And as far as sanctity is concerned, the River Yamunā is more directly connected with Lord Kṛṣṇa than the Ganges. The Lord sanctified the River Yamunā from the beginning of His transcendental pastimes in this world. While His father Vasudeva was crossing the Yamunā with the baby Lord Kṛṣṇa for a safe place at Gokula on the other bank of the river from Mathurā, the Lord fell down in the river, and by the dust of His lotus feet the river at once became sanctified. It is especially mentioned herein that Mahārāja Parīkṣit took shelter of that particular river which is beautifully flowing, carrying the dust of the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa, mixed with tulasī leaves. Lord Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet are always besmeared with the tulasī leaves, and thus as soon as His lotus feet contact the water of the Ganges and the Yamunā, the rivers become at once sanctified. The Lord, however, contacted the River Yamunā more than the Ganges. According to the Varāha Purāṇa, as quoted by Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī, there is no difference between the water of the Ganges and the Yamunā, but when the water of the Ganges is sanctified one hundred times, it is called the Yamunā. Similarly, it is said in the scriptures that one thousand names of Viṣṇu are equal to one name of Rāma, and three names of Lord Rāma are equal to one name of Kṛṣṇa.

Jai Srila Prabhupada ki

Devotees: Jai!!!

(Gurudev chants the invocation prayers very beautifully and then chants a beautiful prayer glorifying Kṛṣṇa)

kastūrī tilakaṃ lalāṭapaṭale vakṣaḥsthale kaustubhaṁ
nāsāgrevaramauktikaṃ karatale veṇuṃ kare kaṅkaṇam
sarvāṅge haricandanaṃ sulalitaṃ kaṇṭhe ca muktāvaliṁ
gopastrīpariveṣṭito vijayate gopālacūḍāmaṇiḥ

Gurudev: Nice description about the Lord again. We have seen so many verses. That's why He is correctly known as Uttama sloka. And here Parikshit Maharaj  describes correctly being the devotee. He was saved in the womb of his mother that's why his name is already Vishnurāt, one who is protected by Vishnu. Our condition here is also very peculiar. And definitely we were also protected by Him in the womb of our mother. Otherwise it is very difficult to survive in those conditions. After being born also as we know the Supersoul doesn't leave us. So the whole of our existence should be over shadowed by the different ascepts of His energy or Himself. Otherwise this existence has no meaning really. Here the example of Ganges and Yamuna is given. These, these rivers are sanctified. Not only that but the, I don't know whether you have visited the places very nice pilgrim centre in, near Calcutta. From Calcutta it takes about five hours drive by coach and it is known as Ganga sagar. It's a very important pilgrim centre, place. It is exactly situated at the point where the Ganges meets the ocean. It's a, it's a sweet ocean inside you know. You can't see the other side. Such a mass of sweet water goes into the ocean. And the funny thing is that if you really sit there and watch the water it doesn't mix with the, with the ocean water. But it drops down really. It goes down. The meaning is that the Ganges is a spiritual river. It flows through the planets, punāti bhuvana trayam, it sanctifies all the three planetary systems.

As we go to the Himalayas and you people have a means to go to, make it a point to go before you glide down to the middle ages. You should see these places in the Himalayas. Badrinarayan is now by bus, you can go. But Gangotri we have to climb something. And Yamunotri also we have to climb. But if you go to the point Gangotri, that is the flow of the river. If you go ahead to the root of Ganges, then you go to the real root. Then a big glacier you can see. Somewhere the photographs I have seen, somebody had already gone there. And that big, from that big glacier unlimited amount of water flows underneath. Nobody knows the source of the glacier. So there must be some celestial connection. Otherwise uninterrupted flow of the water in that height is not possible really. This shows that the description of Ganges is very correct that it flows through celestial planets to this planet. We may not have any proof, but as we already spoke about the Ramsetu, foolishly we have changed the names of that strait between Lanka and India. And Ramsetu’s name is also changed. Now it is known as Adam's bridge. Some Adam must have found something there. So he named it after Adam. And we have completely forgotten about Ram. But the credit goes to Ram even now and it is in India at least it is known as Ramsetu. And this NASA has released the pictures. So it's the proof that Ramayan is correct. Not only Ramayan, but all our scriptures are very much correct. The only reason we don't have faith is because we don't have sufficient information about their validity. But everything is very valid there. Please put full faith in these things and try to excavate. You are very young. You please go to these places, try to find out more about them. And you find in the scriptures in the pages of Bhagavatam and other scriptures they are exactly befitting.

Herein while going to Badrinarayan you come across main center in between Badrinarayan and Haridwar. It seems in the, in the in between Himalyan range. And it's nice place. We went to see there and there is one Kund there. It is a sought of tank, water tank and there are two taps flowing continuously there. And one tap looks like a Ganges water and the other tap looks like Yamuna water. I don't know how or from where they are flowing. People try to find out their source but they couldn't find. So eventually there was a risk of destruction, so they left it incomplete. The point is that we were, our forefathers might be very highly advanced in architecture or whatever and from somewhere they have brought both the water, the colour, you can see from the colour that one is bluish, Ganges, Yamuna water and one is whitish that is Ganga water in the same tap. The point is that Ganga and Yamuna they are all pervading. Kṛṣṇa is all pervading. So whatever is touched by Kṛṣṇa is all pervading. If you allow, allow sincerely yourself to be constantly touched by Him you also become all pervading. I mean to say we have the bodily restriction but we have the full idea, the knowledge automatically is obtained, ahaitukam, you know. vāsudeve bhagavati, bhakti-yogaḥ prayojitaḥ, when we are impelled by the force of devotional service, everything becomes known. yasmin vijnāte sarvam evam vijnātam bhavati. And at least we are satisfied, we know Kṛṣṇa, and everything we know.

Our forefathers did not have any schools to go to. They were not educated in English language. They didn't dream even to leave the coast of India. And even then, they had all this knowledge was at their disposal. Frankly speaking these countries were not habitable at that time. So it was custom that we should not leave the coast of India. And, and afterwards it was found out that, if you go to the foreign countries, then you have to eat meat and drink liquor and this and that. So our people were completely barred from going there. I remember the time when somebody went to England to have the barrister degree and when he came back he was thrown out of the community. They said he is polluted. He is very correct, it is very correct. All, all these countries, no river, from no river, you can drink the water. Here also there are so many rivers. In India also, the position at the moment is the very horrible regarding water pollution. But even then, if you go to the Himalayan range, water is quite pure. It flows nobody, nobody knows, plenty of water flows in Haridwar. You go to Haridwar, you cannot stand in the flow of Ganges river. So powerful flow is there.

And you will be surprised to know that the mental disturbances are completely cured if you take snana in a flowing water. Near the bank of the river there are poles, iron poles, you might have seen. Went to see Ganges sometime near Haridwar? Aye! You didn't go? You went to Mayapur? The flow is very strong there also. If you are not careful you are taken to Ganga sagar. This is how. If you want to die that is the best place. (Gurudev laughs). And nobody will know, nobody will be able to save you. Here the coast guards are there. There is no coast guard. It is only Kṛṣṇa there. (Gurudev laughs) He says, "Come on now enough you had in this world. I will take you away." (laughter) This, this is the force of that river. In Calcutta if that is the force, how much it should be when it comes down from the Himalayas, Rishikesh and Haridwar ? In Rishikesh, it is a miracle. These all these places must be visited to see these things. It comes with great force from the Himalayas. And Rishikesh is at the foot, at the foot of Himalaya. It raves with a great force and it comes there and becomes very still when it touches Lord's lotus feet there. That area is very peaceful. And again as soon as that area is finished, again it starts flowing very hard.

Please you people are young, you have some time, nice tour you know for a month or two or three and take, look to these places. By seeing you will gain so much. And there are so many puranic evidences from puranas that this is the fact. Prabhupada has given us the essence here of Ganga and Yamuna. The point is that wherever the drinking water is, it is Ganges water. Because the water goes through. And because it goes through it should infiltrate and our globe is round. So water which goes to ocean, Bay of Bengal should be coming out in America. Because we are exactly the opposite side or Australia or wherever the water can, find out.
And we have the experience because of the different boring that anywhere you bore, and you will get the water, the water is in plenty. Not only that, but this ocean water, also is the form of the Ganges water. And it is a locked water you know. The ocean is like a big lake, vast lake. So the water generally not pure in that condition. Water must be flowing. So Kṛṣṇa has arranged the flow, the currents in the ocean also.

And we have this geographical evidence that always there are currents, around England there are currents, around Australia there are currents because these are the obstructions in the vast water. Water tries to flow but the whole continent is obstruction. As we saw yesterday the whirlpool. A big whirlpool is created around these continents or island particularly. There are many islands situated in between thousands and thousands of kilometer of water. We were in Hawaii. You have seen in Hawaii. There is a small group of islands and surrounded by vast Pacific ocean. When they will disappear, we will never know. We will never know that Hawaii is gone you know. It's such a small piece of and so strong waves are there. You can see the erosion, effect of erosion when you go to the sea coast in Hawaii. There are small hills there and they are completely getting eroded. The same way the islands are getting eroded. All these are the flows. That water appeared to be stagnant, but it's not. There's high activity in the ocean water. And where there is activity, there is purity. That is proved.

And apart from these activity again there is a big unseen activity is going on. That thousands of kilometers water is always having heat from the sunshine. And because of the heat enormous amount of water is converted into the vapours in the form of clouds. And these clouds are driven by the winds to the land and gives the sweet water. It is a highly purifying factory. But there are no chimneys. There is nothing to be done. It's all purified process. As soon as you come to realise this our faith in these, in the pure water increases. As soon as you remain, understand these things, you try to have the clear water. Where were we, they were collecting rain water you know? It was in America somewhere. So what happened the rain in the valley, it was high rain fall. And so they had automatic natural rain water arrangement. Every house had big tanks over the house and the rain water was there. Or underneath the house in Dwaraka. And even now every building has a water tank underneath and it is connected to the roof. So when there is rainfall, rain water is collected. And this is how we saw how the water system is run by the rain water. And rain water is nothing but the purified Ganges water. It's all, drinking water, is all Ganges water. Otherwise there can’t be any purity. This is what this celestial river means. Only the water becomes dirty when it is touched by the ground. Every ground has it's own, own composition. Australia has its own composition, Asia has its own composition. In that also every country, has its own composition. And this is how the water becomes different. But the water is not different at all.

And once we understand this and there is no need of going to India and sit on the bank of Ganges and Yamuna. But you can go here and sit at the sea coast and you will have the same effect. This is the point. And as soon as you come to this, then we always remember that the unflinching faith in the Supreme Lord will push us to perform the sincere devotional service particularly when we are facing the death. You have seen that. And before we die, we see whole of our lifetime Kṛṣṇa's miracles. Ram setu is one of the miracles of Lord Ram. We know from Ram, from the pages of Ramayan that thirty kilometers of bridge without the, any support is not a human endeavour, it has no support. This we saw in between, we were in Malaysia and Penang is the island there. And it's very near to the main land. But in between that twenty four kilometers ocean, so they wanted to build a bridge there. So they had to build, they had to build bridge on the pillars. So what did they, both ways six kilometers they have the bridge, they have the pillars and in between twelve kilometers, it is hanging bridge. That's the longest bridge I saw in the world. I don't know, I may not be knowing all the bridges. There might be still longer bridge than that, I don't know. But this is how human endeavour is always limited.

It's only the Supreme endeavour, doesn't have any limits. And the same thing applies to all our scriptures, they are also more and more purifying than the Ganges. The Ganges river may purify our life, if you regularly go and take bath in the Ganges. But this Kṛṣṇa Katha just you hear, and punati bhuvana trayam, as soon as you hear Kṛṣṇa Katha, there is an effect, internal effect on your body. More you hear, the more you become lively. And immediate. As soon as you hear, the effect is there. It's more important than the Ganges river. So Parikshit Maharaj knew this. So he just went there and to his surprise, all the sages were there in front of him. So he was asking them the first question that, "Please tell me, Now I am going to die after seven days. So what is my duty?" And the second question he asked that, "what is the duty of the people who are definitely going to die?" And that is we, all of us, we don't know when, but we are going to die. So these, the answer to these two questions is whole Bhagavatam. Otherwise if there was no purpose, why the devotee like Parikshit lost his control of mind and became angry because he was thirsty and hungry? On the contrary he could have just controlled hunger and thirst. And he could have behaved in a nice way. But Kṛṣṇa wanted him to behave in this way. And that is how many times, devotees in order to please Kṛṣṇa, they behave in a strange way. It was Kṛṣṇa's arrangement. Nobody is free here. yad ishvaram vasham jagat. And because everybody is helplessly under the control of Kṛṣṇa, every activity in fact is carried out by Him. This does not only really comfort us that tomorrow you go the pubs and tell that Kṛṣṇa suggested. Or Kṛṣṇa is making me drink. No, no, we have a bit of independence, we shouldn't misuse that independence. But all our major activities are definitely conducted by Him. Particularly the devotees. Arjuna was the constant companion of Kṛṣṇa. So no way he would be illusioned. And even then, he is illusioned. And he wanted Kṛṣṇa to take the chariot in between the two armies and he wanted to see, with whom he has to fight. He knew already with whom he had to fight. Why should he order Kṛṣṇa to take the chariot there? And as soon as he saw he was completely illusioned, sīdanti mama gātrāṇi, mukhaṁ ca pariśuṣyati. Very nice description is there in the first chapter of Bhagavad Gita. sīdanti mama gātrāṇi, "my all senses become completely loose, my limbs are completely loose, I cannot stand Kṛṣṇa," he says. sīdanti mama gātrāṇi, mukhaṁ ca pariśuṣyati, "my mouth is drying. And I don't know really I lost my composure." And he sat down on the chariot and said that, "I am not going to fight."

This cannot be the condition of Arjun who was a close companion of Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is highly enthusiastic. How can He, His friend, His closest companion be put into this condition? The point is that these devotees, they are put into this condition by Kṛṣṇa. He wants to give something to them so that humanity at large will follow the instruction. And that is how Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatam has come into existence. Once you understand this, then we will understand the whole purpose of these scriptures. And many times we have heard that these scriptures are meant to reclaim the lost souls. Any time we hear, then we hear that we have to follow the regulative principles, we hear that we have to carry on worship, we have to come here at 4’o clock and have mangala arati and etc., or we have to hear. So many years we are hearing these things. What is the purpose?

Gurudev: (not clear), please wake him up. Ya! I am asking the question. No,

Devotee: (not audible)

Gurudev: pardon, (Gurudev laughs),

Devotee: (not audible)

Gurudev: very tired. I am not blaming you.  We are very much thankful to you because you people are on the roads for the whole day. We are here taking rest at your cost. (Gurudev laughs).

Devotee: (not audible)

Gurudev laughs.
Gurudev: Please excuse us. I really admire your labour. I am seeing you since last four, five days, nonstop you girls and boys, you're on the road. Really because of your piety, these places are functioning. However we try to hide the real fact, how much money we require to carry on this show. How much money is involved, daily hundreds of plates of prasadam is going on. We cannot cook for two pairs anyhow. How, how these things are managed, please carry on these things. You all are walking Bhagavatam. I am talking Bhagavatam. (Gurudev and devotees laughs). So when I talk, you please take rest. (Gurudev and devotees laugh). I am talking Bhagavatam. I am not walking Bhagavatam. (Gurudev laughs) Please we are utilising your youth. We are really very much thankful and indebted to you people who are really standing in cold outside. We know how bad inside the room, we cannot control, cannot tolerate the cold. (Gurudev laughs).  Early in the morning, there is no water. Many times I open the tap and we don't get the hot water. You also may be experiencing the same thing. Taking in half cold water or half warm, I don't know what water you get. We never care for you. Then when you come back, we don't care for you. Because our stomach is full with the chapatis etc., man we don't care for you at all. Excuse us. Please, please these are the facts.

What is this Ganges and Kṛṣṇa katha? It is nothing. You are real Ganges, you are Kṛṣṇa katha. Please don't get discouraged. Take rest, rest and the standing on the road should be balanced. We don't blame you at all. Because unless you take rest, your buckets will not be full. Your buckets are empty, our stomach will be empty. ( Gurudev and devotees laugh). This is very intimate connection within our stomachs and your buckets. (Devotees laugh). The only wiring is missing. (Gurudev and devotees laugh). Please, please excuse us. We are just entertaining you through this thing. (Gurudev laughs). That is all. There is no, please remember that the sacrifice, yajna you know (Gurudev laughs). Sacrifice is always very nice. And very nice to lecture, give lecture on the sacrifice. I don't want to sacrifice. I want you to sacrifice. Excuse me for that. (Gurudev and devotees laugh). And if you sleep, I become very upset. Hey! He is dozing and, And you stand one day, one day on the street like him, and you will sleep for fifteen days. He is just dozing. (Gurudev and devotees laugh). And he is just, Aye..(Gurudev makes funny noise). ( Gurudev and devotees laugh)

Please, please, please excuse us. We are indebted to you. And Kṛṣṇa is very pleased by your austerity. That's why some big things are coming. You are really, you people are giving your blood to that project. And on you we depend. We should be satisfied by so much austerity. You will be saving so many living entities. May the Lord bless us and the dream come true. Prabhupada always was telling that we should always think high. If you think high then you have achieved. If you think low then you won't achieve anything. So please we are thinking very high on your, on your pillars. Our bridge is not hanging bridge. Ram setu may be hanging. But our bridge is standing on your head. Please,so many boys have already worked. You are working now. Again somebody will be working. So this, because of this non stop, nonstop Bhagavatam we are able to succeed. As soon as this Bhagavatam is stopped, this Bhagavatam will not.... We will get inspiration from these pages by Prabhupada. But as we have to put into practice, you are putting into practice. And we are just behind the curtain. (Gurudev laughs).

Please, please try to continue these things and this is your Kṛṣṇa katha. We, we have to encourage people at large to come to this side. They are suffering unsurpassable miseries. And that's why Prabhupada really did so much when he was with us. In his presence we had hundred eight temples and not only hundred eight temples but he was the only one, when he got these temples. And how could he manage? Only by sincere devotional service he was able to manage. He had very, unflinching faith in Kṛṣṇa. Never he tried anything else, never, never. As we know when he got down at Boston from the Jaladuta, he didn't know whether to go right or left. That was his condition. Nobody knew him. He didn't have any acquaintances. He didn't know whether he can prepare khichdi somewhere or not to eat. Severe cold was there. He was not habituated. Seventy years old again, no strength. And even then he could achieve so much. How much more we can achieve?

Please don't get discouraged by the temporary reverses. Remember always Kṛṣṇa. You are putting on such an effort in the service. Please may Lord bless you. And Kṛṣṇa definitely sees. He has so many agents which are seeing you day and night. Please, eat nice prasadam, hot  prasadam. There is nobody to cook, you cook and eat nice hot khichdi. Khichdi does not take long to cook. Just you mix rice and dal, within twenty minutes it is ready. Put some nice butter into it, bit of salt and haldi and khichdi, full food you know. Particularly you should try to eat green khichdi and it's the green dal, moong dal. So please try to make hot prasadam. If we could do, we could have kept nice hot prasadam ready for you by the time you come back. Your buckets I take care and you eat khichdi. (Gurudev and devotees laugh).

Please, please excuse us for this but this is the point you know. The, somebody works and somebody talks. (Gurudev laughs). But talking also requires some prasadam. (Gurudev and devotees laugh) Jai Srila Prabhupada ki, he is saying, really enough, he tells us to shut up. (Gurudev and devotees laugh). Hare Kṛṣṇa. Thank you very much for all the kindness. Haribol! Jai!

Devotee: Jai!

Gurudev: Srila Prabhupada ki

Devotees: jai

Devotee: Srila Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj ki!

Gurudev laughs

Devotees: jai!

( lecture ends with the blowing of conchshells)
